OVERVIEW

The goal of this training is to improve communication in Montana’s long-term care facilities. SBAR is a communication tool that has demonstrated improvements in both communication and patient outcomes. This training will focus on using SBAR with residents who can communicate clearly and residents who may not be able to communicate as clearly such as those with dementia.

Training Objectives:

  • Review the evidence supporting SBAR
  • Identify and understand the four components of SBAR
  • Apply SBAR reports to the clinical setting
  • Perform all four components of the SBAR report independently
  • Understand how communication can become difficult for people with dementia
  • Understand the unique challenges of performing SBAR reports on dementia patients
  • Perform SBAR reports for dementia patients

About the Trainers

  • Mackenzie Westphal is a Doctor of Nursing Practice student graduating in May of 2023 from Montana State University. As a family nurse practitioner, she is planning to work in primary care. Prior to pursuing her graduate degree, she spent several years working as an intensive care unit nurse. She is very passionate about geriatric care and has also spent several years working as a certified nurse aid in long-term care facilities in Montana.
  • Margaret Hammersla is an Assistant Professor at Montana State University at the Mark and Robyn Jones College of Nursing and an Adult Nurse Practitioner. Dr. Hammersla has worked in a variety of clinical arenas including perioperative care, emergency medicine, long-term care, and dementia management. She currently maintains a clinical practice with the Bozeman Health Geriatric Team that involves primary care house call visits to a frail elderly population in Gallatin County, Montana. Her area of research focuses on how nurse practitioners can address the needs of the rural geriatric population and improved access to health care. She is also an expert in quality improvement processes with a focus on implementation of evidence-based care and health care systems.
  • Lauren Hastings is an Adult Gerontology Acute Care Certified Nurse Practitioner currently working in Bozeman, Montana as part of the Bozeman Health Geriatric Team. This team specializes in care that serves the elderly and frail population in Gallatin County both in their home and/or in facilities. She also has experience in urgent care, family medicine, and internal medicine.
