Feedback Sought for Draft Healthy Fall 2020 Plan

June 19, 2020

Dear UM colleagues,

I write today to share a draft of the campus-specific guidance for UM's Healthy Fall 2020 plan. You may recall from an earlier communication that the UM Healthy Fall 2020 plan will include:

  1. General Health and Safety Guidelines. This guidance includes checklists for supervisors and managers to complete as part of a resumption of in-person operations. The General Health and Safety Guidelines draft document that was shared last week is in final editing, and we expect to release it next week.
  2. Campus-specific guidance for each of the 11 planning areas identified in the MUS guidance. Below are the 11 planning areas around which the MUS guidance and the UM plan are structured, along with the UM lead or co-leads for each. Each planning area has many additional team members and works closely with the Health Advisory Group, which has included many of our faculty and Curry Health Center experts. The 11 planning areas and leads are:
  • Deliver Quality Instruction (Nathan Lindsay)
  • Conduct Research and Creative Scholarship (Scott Whittenburg)
  • Provide Student Housing (Sarah Swager and Sandy Curtis)
  • Provide Food Services (Sarah Swager and Byron Drake)
  • Events and Welcoming Students/Visitors to Campus (Sarah Swager, Shannon Brilz, Chuck Maes)
  • Athletics (Kent Haslam and Chuck Maes)
  • Provide Student Support Services (Sarah Swager and Brian Reed)
  • Staff Campus Operations (Paul Lasiter)
  • Maintain Buildings and Facilities (Kevin Krebsbach)
  • Provide Campus Transportation (Jordan Hess)
  • Campus Safety and Security (Chuck Emnett and Marty Ludemann)

To help our planning teams refine this campus-specific guidance and to help surface considerations not yet addressed, we invite your input on this document, as well as on the previously released General Health and Safety Guidelines. We will collect questions and input starting today through Friday, July 3. This period includes options for informational Zoom sessions, feedback submitted via UM Box and the option to contact the leads for each program area to ask questions or share feedback. The following Zoom sessions are planned for next week:

Information Sessions for Instructors

Two information and feedback sessions will be held via Zoom. These sessions will be focused solely on academic affairs and instructional delivery. To participate in an information session for instructors, please register by clicking on one of the links below:

General Information Sessions

Two information and feedback sessions will be held via Zoom. These sessions will focus on all areas except for the academically focused "Deliver Quality Instruction" planning area, which will be addressed during the two dedicated sessions for instructors listed above. Please register for these general information sessions by clicking one of the links below:

Feedback for all planning areas will be gathered in the Zoom sessions, via Box Notes and by emails to the planning area lead contacts. Feedback must be received by 5 p.m. Friday, July 3, to ensure it is included in the first complete version of the plan. We know that, as our understanding of COVID-19 evolves, updates to this plan will be necessary. The work represented in the draft plan represents thousands of hours of difficult and thoughtful work by many of our colleagues, and I want to sincerely thank them, and you, for the tireless effort in preparing for the fall semester.
