Please direct all questions to Biosafety Officer Linda Hicks (linda.hicks@mso.umt.edu).

The University of Montana (UM) Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan is provided to eliminate or minimize the exposure of all UM employees and students to human blood or human blood products that might contain bloodborne pathogens. This plan is in compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) Bloodborne Pathogen standard 29 CFR 1910.1030.

Bloodborne Pathogens Training and Quiz

In 1991, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, 29CFR 1910.1030 was passed to protect workers from this risk.  The standard mandates that employees who may come into contact with human blood or tissue as part of their job duties be provided with Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) training on an annual basis.

All employees and students at UM who are at risk of contacting human bloodborne pathogens while performing their jobs or research are required to have annual BBP training.  Each Principal Investigator or supervisor is responsible for documenting that his/her staff and students who are at risk are given training when initially beginning work and annually thereafter.

The Institutional Biosafety Committee provides this BBP training as a Powerpoint slide presentation. If you have any questions about the information presented in the slides, or if you would like to speak to someone directly about the information presented, please call the Biosafety Officer, Kathy Heivilin, at 243-6395 or kathryn.heivilin@umontana.edu.  CDs of the BBP presentation are available for off-line training.

Open the presentation and read the material carefully.

When finished viewing the presentation, you are required to take a short quiz.  You may use the presentation for reference during the exam, and the exam can be downloaded to your computer for convenience.

Give the completed quiz to your Principal Investigator or supervisor for grading.  A passing grade is 80%.
