FINANCIAL
AID
Financial
aid may be available for Summer Semester 2008 courses, listed
on the Schedule
Information Page.
NOTE: Although financial aid is not typically
available for the UM
Continuing Education Extended Courses, off-campus
courses such as the Flathead Lake Biological Station may qualify.
Contact the Financial
Aid Office for more information.
LIMITATIONS
Except for students eligible for the Work
Study Only program, students must be admitted to
a degree program and maintain a minimum of six credit hours
to remain eligible for financial aid. Students who drop below
six credits may jeopardize future eligibility and may owe repayment
of funds from the Summer Semester.
As Summer Semester marks the end of the financial aid year,
summer aid is limited to students' remaining eligibility from
annual limits set by federal regulations.
Provided all requirements have been met, financial aid may be
available to students to apply as a future credit for fee payment
beginning in April. Students on financial aid probation for
Spring Semester may not use financial aid as a credit for fee
payment until grades are recorded. UM does not process refunds
for students until financial aid dollars are received and classes
have begun.
Please note: Students planning to use Financial
Aid for credit toward fee payment must be registered for the
appropriate number of credits in the registration system or
aid will not be authorized.
Late applicants should be prepared to pay fees on their own
and wait for reimbursement later in the summer.
For in-school Aid, Grants, Loans
and in school Work Study, students must be enrolled
for a minimum of six credits and complete the following steps
to be considered for federal financial aid:
1. Complete and submit the UM Financial Aid
Office Summer
Supplement Form. The form is available beginning
in January and should be returned to the Financial Aid Office
as soon as possible.
2. Complete and submit the 2007-2008 Free
Application for federal student aid (FAFSA) to the
federal processor. In order to receive aid in a timely manner,
students should file the form immediately. Warning: the FAFSA
cannot be processed if received after June 30, 2008.
For the summer Work Study Only Program,
students must meet the following criteria:
1. Be enrolled for Spring Semester 2008 and
plan to enroll Autumn Semester 2008.
2. Complete and submit a request for Summer
Work Study only.
3. Must have completed the FAFSA
for the 2008-2009 aid year and have
responded to requests for additional documentation.
Summer work study programs are limited by the amount of funds
available. Early application does not guarantee summer awards.
NOTE: Students receiving federal financial
aid who withdraw during a semester must adhere to the Summer
Semester deadlines.

PAYMENT
Students using financial aid may register and use financial
aid only if they receive official notice that aid offers have
been completed. If they choose to do so, students may register
and pay with their own funds and be reimbursed later.

AWARD OFFERS
Summer aid offers are limited to remaining Federal Pell Grant
and student loan dollars. Besides the Work
Study Only program, limited work study funds may
be available for students who request them and are enrolled
for six or more credits.

ALTERNATIVE LOANS
The FAFSA
for 2007-2008 must have been received before alternative loans
will be made available. If necessary additional private loans
for a minimum of $1,000 may be available to students who do
not qualify for federally funded programs or if federal financial
aid is insufficient to cover the cost of attendance. Students
should contact the Financial
Aid Office for applications and further information.
Applications must be submitted by July 27, 2008.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND FEE WAIVERS
There is no official scholarship program offered by the Financial
Aid Office for the Summer Semester. Academic departments may
offer scholarships for special situations. Students who receive
scholarships from outside sources should submit this evidence
to the Financial Aid Office as soon as it is known. Some resident
students may be eligible for Montana fee waivers, including
Native American students, veterans who served in a period of
war and no longer receive benefits, senior citizens, or surviving
children or spouses of peace officers or fire fighters who have
been killed in the line of duty. Students should contact the
Financial
Aid Office with questions about fee waivers. Fee
waivers do not apply to UM
Continuing Education Extended Courses.

ASUM SHORT TERM STUDENT LOANS
ASUM short term student loans, from $50-$200, are available
to ASUM Activity Fee-paying students who have a GPA of 2.0 or
better and are enrolled for 7 or more credits. With the exception
of the UM College of Technology, students must have enrolled
during the previous semester and may not be in their final semester
of enrollment. This requirement is waived for students awaiting
the receipt of Stafford Loan monies to be paid in the current
semester, as are co-signer requirements for loans over $50.
Other restrictions may apply. ASUM loan forms are available
from the Associated Students of The University of Montana (ASUM)
office in University Center Room 105. More information about
short term student loans can be obtained here,
or by contacting ASUM at 406.243.2451.
