Health Insurance Requirement

UM Health Insurance Policy

The Montana University System requires all students taking six (6) or more credits, and paying mandatory fees, to have and maintain major medical insurance while they are attending school each fall/spring semester. This includes international students on F and J visas.

For international students on J-1 visas specifically, they are required to have medical insurance that meets US Department of State requirements mandated by federal law.

J-1 Health Insurance Requirements:

  • Medical benefits of at least $100,000 per accident or illness
  • Repatriation of remains in the amount of $25,000
  • Medical evacuation expenses to home country in the amount of $50,000
  • Deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness

There are a number of health insurance plans that will satisfy the minimum coverage amounts for J-1 students, including the UM Student Health Insurance Plan. All international students at UM on F or J visa types are recommended to purchase the UM Student Health Insurance Plan because it is a high quality plan that allows for maximum convenience while being a student at UM. This is because it covers treatment received at Curry Health Center which is UM's on-campus health center dedicated to serving UM students.

For more information, please visit Curry Health Center's website for the Student Health Insurance Plan, as well as information regarding Refusing/Purchasing Student Insurance.

Alternative Health Insurance Providers for International Students

If you'd like to choose a health insurance policy that is not the UM Student Health Insurance Plan, the following companies provide health insurance for international students studying in the United States. It is a requirement that any chosen plan for J-1 students meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Medical benefits of at least $100,000 per accident or illness
  • Repatriation of remains in the amount of $25,000
  • Medical evacuation expenses to home country in the amount of $50,000
  • Deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness

F-1 students are also recommended to purchase a plan that meets the minimum requirements above. Before selecting a plan, please do your research carefully, write down any questions you have, and talk with a representative from the company to ensure all of your questions are answered and so you know what the plan covers, what it does not cover, and that it satisfies the minimum requirements for your visa type.
