Our Mission

The English Language Institute (ELI) serves non-native speakers of English who wish to improve their English language and academic skills in order to pursue academic goals at the University of Montana (UM) or another institution of higher learning along with pursuing personal and professional goals.

The English Language Institute of University of Montana is accredited through the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA). CEA is recognized by the U.S. secretary of education as a national accrediting agency for English language programs and institutions in the U.S.

ELI actively supports professional development within the fields of international education and English language teaching through NAFSA: Association of International Educators. NAFSA is the world's largest nonprofit association dedicated to international education and exchange. NAFSA membership provides unmatched access to best-in-class programs, information, and resources.

ELI is a proud member of University and College Intensive English Programs (UCIEP). UCIEP is an independent consortium of university and college-administered intensive English programs in the United States. The ELI program is committed to the consortium's effort to ensure that students receive the highest quality intensive English instruction from trained, professional teachers.

The English Language Institute is accredited through University of Montana Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). Accreditation of an institution of higher education by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities indicates that it meets or exceeds criteria for the assessment of institutional quality evaluated through a peer review process.
