Summer Employment Opportunities

Overview

UM Housing offers a variety of student employment positions during the summer to assist the department with our Summer Conference program and Maintenance and Custodial Operations. The Summer Conference Staff application includes Conference Assistants, Summer Resident Assistants, and Desk Assistants. The Summer Maintenance and Custodial Application may include Painters, Grounds Crew, and Custodians depending on staffing needs to assist in the Residence Halls and apartment communities.

Summer Maintenance and Custodial Position Information

Summer Maintenance and Custodial staff work within the Residence Halls and apartment communities to assist with either the painting crew, grounds crew, or custodial staff. Applications for the painting crew are only accepted if there are any anticipated openings. Summer staff work with one of the three areas, but not all three. Prior work experience within maintenance and custodial work is not required. The position begins Monday, May 13, 2024, and employment continues until Friday, August 23, 2024. These positions start at $15.00 per hour. This position is open to both student employees and non-student temporary employees.

Summer Maintenance and Custodial Staff Application Process

Application

All Summer Maintenance and Custodial candidates (students and non-student temporary employees) must complete an online Summer Maintenance and Custodial Application to be considered for the position. Candidates may apply for multiple positions within the application. The Summer Maintenance and Custodial Application opens on or before February 16, 2024, and closes on April 26, 2024. Once an application is received, you will receive an email with information about scheduling an individual interview if you are moving on to the next phase of the selection process.

All Summer Maintenance and Custodial candidates must attend an individual interview. This interview will consist of a question and answer session with the questions being more biographical in nature so we can get to know who you are, why you are interested in being part of the Summer Maintenance and Custodial staff, and what kind of activities, jobs, and experiences you have been involved in.

Hiring Notification

All Summer Maintenance and Custodial candidates will be notified of their hiring status the last week of April.

Summer Conference Staff Information

Senior Conference Assistant

The Senior Conference Assistant is a staff member that works within the Residence Hall(s) and assists conference guests during their stay at the University of Montana and takes on additional leadership within the Conference Assistant staff. The Senior Conference Assistant may choose to be provided an on campus residence hall room during their appointment and serve in the on-call rotation with Conference Assistants or to live off campus. This position works closely with the Conference Coordinator in the UM Housing Office and an Area Coordinator within a specific Residence Hall Area with administrative tasks such as large group check-ins, key inventory, and resolving issues. The Senior Conference Assistant may work up to 29 hours per week, is paid an hourly rate, and receives an on-campus room within their assigned Residence Hall. The Senior Conference Assistant will take on additional tasks and responsibilities when Autumn Staff Training begins to assist with the Summer to Autumn transition within the Residence Halls. The Senior Conference Assistant must be able to commit to working the entire summer and be able to stay in the position until Saturday, August 17, 2024. (Note: Fall 2024 Residence Hall staff may apply for this position but staff with availability through August 17 may be given priority consideration.)

Conference Assistant

Conference Assistants are live-in staff members working within the Residence Hall(s) and assisting conference guests during their stay at the University of Montana. They assist with detailed projects such as check-in, checkout, key inventory, desk coverage, on-call coverage, and other administrative tasks within the UM Housing Office. Conference Assistants may work up to 29 hours per week, are paid and hourly rate, and receive an on-campus room within their assigned Residence Hall. Conference Desk Assistant

Conference Desk Assistants work within the Residence Hall(s) and assist conference guests during their stay at the University of Montana. They assist with detail-orientated projects such as check-in, checkout, key inventory, desk coverage, and other administrative tasks within the UM Housing Office. Desk Assistants typically work 10-20 hours per week, but may work up to 29 hours per week, and are paid an hourly rate. Summer Resident Assistant

The Summer Resident Assistant are live-in staff responsible for several floors/wings of the Summer Residence Hall. They work in all phases of the residential living experience alongside the Area Coordinator and are responsible for their floor community. They foster an atmosphere for academic, social, cultural, and emotional growth in the Residence Hall by serving as an advisor to the residents, they assist in the enforcement of all University and hall policies, as well as provide desk coverage, on-call coverage, and other administrative tasks within the UM Housing Office. They are responsible for the general well-being, community development, and student learning environment in the Residence Hall. Summer Resident Assistants may work up to 29 hours per week, are paid and hourly rate, and receive an on-campus room in their assigned Residence Hall.

Summer Conference Staff Application Process

Application

All Summer Conference candidates must complete an online Summer Conference Application to be considered for the position. Candidates may apply for multiple Conference Staff positions within the application. The Summer Conference Application opens on or before February 19, 2024, and closes on March 22, 2024. Once an application is received, you will receive an email with information about scheduling an individual interview.

Summer Conference staff can simultaneously apply to be a 2024-2025 Desk Assistant. If offered both positions, Summer Conference staff would end their summer position on August 17, 2024 and begin work as an academic year Desk Assistant to help with opening for Fall Semester. All Academic Year Desk Assistants will be required to work some nights and weekends, including weekend nights. All Academic Year DAs must be available to attend mandatory DA training on Monday, August 5 at 9am. DAs living in the residence halls will be able to move in early on Friday, August 2 at no charge as long as they are available for mandatory training on to work throughout the residence hall opening week before classes start.

Individual Interview

Summer Conference candidates who do not currently work for UM Housing or have never worked for UM Housing must attend a 20-minute individual interview. Interviews are optional for current or former UM Housing employees. These interviews will take place in March. This interview will consist of a question and answer session with the questions being more biographical in nature so we can get to know who you are, why you are interested in being part of the Summer Conference staff, and what kind of activities, jobs, and experiences you have been involved in.

Hiring Notification

All Summer Conference candidates will be notified of their hiring status on March 29, 2024, via email.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 2.25 GPA
  • Be a full-time student (12-18 credits) for Spring Semester 2024 (You do not need to be enrolled in summer courses.)
  • Be in good conduct standing with the University
  • Interest in working with people
  • Excellent customer service skills
