Title: Executive Director of Student Success

Primary Functions

The University of Montana seeks an Executive Director for the Office for Student Success, a new office created to improve student success and retention at UM. The Executive Director, reporting to the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education and Policy, provides vision and leadership in all areas promoting student success and retention. The Executive Director:

  • Works collaboratively with others, including Student Affairs (Enrollment Services, Career Services, Disability Services for Students), the University Registrar and Academic Deans, to develop and enhance all aspects of academic assistance
  • Collects and interprets retention and success data that affects decisions and program implementation across the university
  • Oversees the operations of the Undergraduate Advising Center, The Writing Center, Freshman Interest Groups, and tutoring programs (Math Lab, STUDY JAM)
  • Reviews and recommends policies relative to student development issues
  • Qualifications

  • Master's degree in relevant discipline required.
  • Familiarity and significant experience working within public higher education (3-5 years), with additional experience in project management and/or supervisory experience in the area of retention and advising.
  • Demonstrated leadership of a unit that includes supervision of staff, management of fiscal resources, and implementation of programs.
  • Excellent organizational, supervisory, and communication skills, including the ability to use computer technologies and create, design and publish written and electronic information for students and other constituents.
  • Documented skills in administering academic policy, and knowledge and understanding of university and college curricula.
  • Demonstrated ability to collect, analyze, and assess data related to specific desired outcomes and program effectiveness, and to work collaboratively with Institutional Research and other sources of data to achieve assessment/research goals.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of current issues and trends in undergraduate education, retention, and graduation. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the diverse populations on a university campus and the ability to successfully address the various needs and issues presented by a diverse student population.
  • Experience with placement, first-year initiatives and academic support/learning assistance programs such as supplemental instruction and academic coaching.
  • Ability to successfully administer multiple projects/programs and complete or implement them in a timely manner.
