Primary Functions

We seek an exceptional artist with a strong commitment to and demonstrated excellence in teaching. This artist will be the primary faculty in the photography area, with secondary knowledge of painting, drawing, printmaking or foundations. Knowledge and skill in applying traditional and contemporary photographic techniques is essential, as well as an interest in connections across disciplines, new media and contemporary practice.

  • Teach photography at the introductory, advanced and graduate levels.
  • Teach additional courses either in painting, drawing, printmaking or foundations.
  • Opportunities exist to develop new curriculum that encourages hybrid media and interdisciplinary studio work.
  • Coordinate digital lab, chemical darkroom and lighting studio.
  • Continue professional and creative development and contribute to committees, administration, advising and activities of the School of Art, university and community.
  • Qualifications

  • MFA is required.
  • Technical competence in chemical darkroom, digital media and lighting studio required.
  • Technical competence in a secondary media, either painting, drawing, printmaking or foundations. Painting is preferred.
  • Evidence of successful and continuing professional achievement as a practicing artist required. Exhibitions on the national level preferred.
  • Effectiveness as a studio teacher at all levels of university course work required.
  • Experience with contemporary issues and theory required.

    The University of Montana is one of the nation's outstanding public universities committed to liberal arts education, research and strong professional programs.     The School of Art is part of the College of Visual and Performing Arts, which includes art, music, drama/dance and media arts. The school offers Minors in Art studio and Art History and BA, BFA, MA and MFA degrees, and art education endorsements. The school consists of 12 full-time faculty members and three staff. Facilities includes the Fine Arts Building, which houses painting, drawing, printmaking, photography and art education studios, Art History Resource Center, and BFA studios; the Art Annex which houses ceramics studios, sculpture studios and graduate student spaces; Schrieber's graduate student spaces; and the Social Science Building's Gallery of Visual Arts.
