Primary Functions

  • Position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the heating/power plant operations to provide steam and electricity to the UM campus: operates, monitors and maintains accurate records for three high pressure boilers, one 430 kw turbine generator, one diesel emergency generator all with electric and pneumatic controls and all auxiliary support equipment; maintains proper steam pressure and water levels; adjusts equipment to maintain flow of steam to meet load requirements; tends boiler auxiliaries; insures turbine generator efficiency by monitoring exhaust pressure; maintains constant watch on all gauges, recorders and meters; runs three hour logs on all boiler and generator parameters; mixes and injects all boiler and line chemicals; monitors and regenerates water softening system; monitors building control center and reports mechanical alarms; performs general housekeeping in the plant; provides maintenance for the operational equipment during shutdowns and on an as needed basis

  • Position works rotating shifts and requires a first class Stationary Engineer license
  • Minimum Job Qualifications

  • High school graduation and four (4) years of boiler plant operation and two (2) years of turbine experience,or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Must possess, or be able to obtain within six (6) months of employment, a first class license as a Stationary Engineer in the state of Montana
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in the safe and efficient operation of boilers and turbines
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in maintenance activities and hand tool use
  • Knowledge of boiler water treatment, chemistry and techniques for proper management of boiler water chemistry
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to create and maintain effective working relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to follow instructions
  • Knowledge of confined spaces and asbestos work rules

    Qualified candidates must be able to meet minimum requirements and perform the primary functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to perform constant physical activity: Lifting: ground to 48 inches, up to 50#, ground to overhead, up to 15#; Carrying: front carry up to 50# for 50 feet or less; Pushing/Pulling: (during the use of tools and pushing/pulling hand trucks), push and pull forces required, 70# sustained; Static trunk forward bending and twisting from a standing position while using tools; Reaching with your arms in all directions, including overhead; Balancing when climbing and working on a ladder or scaffold; Walking various distances throughout the day on even and uneven surfaces, distances up to 1000 feet for the fireman, and 35,000 feet for the fitter & foreman; Crawling on hands and knees, up to 15 feet; Use of various grip circumferences and strengths as well as static grip positions during the use of various tools (4 1/2" to 5 1/2" circumference needing an average of 50# of grip force) and while manipulating various work materials (maximum 65#) A Physical Screen will be administered prior to a final offer of employment.
