Primary Functions

  • The Medical Assistant provides assistance and direct patient care for the clinic at the Curry Health Center. Duties include, but are not limited to: collecting pertinent information from clients in a variety of situations and responding in an appropriate, professional manner; taking and recording vital signs; preparing patient for examination and medical procedures; assisting health care providers with exams and procedures; explaining exam/treatment procedures to patients; collecting lab specimens; instructing patients regarding medications, referrals and follow-up appointments; monitoring the inventory of sample medications; representing peer group at appropriate clinic meetings; managing the clinics daily work load; managing patient flow; making appointments, including also outside and special providers; obtaining and managing medical records as it relates to appointments; returning phone calls when requested; ordering labs and x-rays; managing returned labs and x-rays; providing internal and external customer service; listening and responding to patient needs; assuring privacy and confidentiality; managing materials; stocking offices and exam rooms; cleaning and sterilizing the equipment; preparing exam room between patients; maintaining clinic equipment;

  • Position will demonstrate: knowledge of procedures and preparation needed for medical exams/procedures; knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology; demonstrated skill in medical procedures; taking vital signs, obtaining height/weight, and collecting lab specimens; basic knowledge of labs commonly ordered; knowledge of medical charting practices and procedures; ability to respond and listen to need/demands of all patients with sensitivity and professionalism; knowledge of basic medical ethics including issues of confidentiality; knowledge of sterilization techniques; knowledge of common procedures including; orthopedic software, crutch fitting, dressing changes, monitor nebulizer patients, cast removal, splint application and ECG’s; ability to operate personal computers, related word processing, spreadsheet and software with ability to learn new software; effective public relations, interpersonal and oral communication skills with the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with a diverse group of individuals; organizational, time management, and multi-tasking skills and ability to meet deadlines in a busy environment with attention to detail
  • Minimum Job Qualifications

  • Current national certification or eligibility to test for either a Certified Medical Assistant or a Registered Medical Assistant or an equivalent combination of education and experience, and current CPR certification
  • Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of procedures and preparation needed for medical exams/procedures
  • Knowledge of medical charting practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of basic medical ethics including issues of confidentiality
  • Demonstrated ability to operate personal computers, related word processing, spreadsheet and software with ability to learn new software
  • Effective public relations, interpersonal and oral communication skills with the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with a diverse group of individuals
  • Physical Requirements

    Qualified candidates must be able to meet minimum requirements and perform the primary functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to work with cleaning solutions, germicides, chemical disinfectants, fumes, and blood borne pathogen exposures; be able to use protective equipment to reduce and minimize exposure to infectious diseases; lift up to 20 lbs.; perform duties requiring assisting patients with limited mobility on an occasional basis, push/pull activity to move wheelchairs and equipment, and reaching/kneeling/crouching/twisting activities on an occasional basis. A Physical Screen will be administered prior to a final offer of employment.
