The University of Montana is one of eight Western research universities in five states that comprise the Inland Northwest Research Alliance (INRA), a non-profit educational and scientific institution. Institutions that comprise INRA are:
- Montana: University of Montana, Montana State University
- Idaho: Boise State University, Idaho State University, University of Idaho
- Washington: Washington State University
- Utah: Utah State University
- Alaska: University of Alaska—Fairbanks
INRA was created to stimulate economic development in the Inland Northwest by promoting new opportunities for research that will benefit the region and by collaborating on the education of Ph.D. research scientists and engineers who can stimulate this economic development.
INRA is a partner with Bechtel and BWXT, Inc., in the management and operations contract for the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL) and also undertakes other collaborative endeavors that will benefit the region. INRA supports collaborative basic and applied research programs between its member universities and the INEEL by funding several diverse multi-year research projects. In addition to fostering this collaborative research program, INRA will educate future scientists and engineers by developing and delivering multi-disciplinary graduate degree programs to its campuses and the INEEL.
INRA's overall mission is to:
- Establish, develop and strengthen multidisciplinary research and educational programs of interest and benefit to the Inland Northwest,
- Collaborate with businesses and government agencies to develop and strengthen such programs at INRA member institutions, and
- Facilitate regional economic development.
