How to Establish a Named Scholarship

Choose the funding option that works best for you:

Annual
Annual scholarships may be established at the current minimum commitment of $1,000 per year, over a four-year period ($4,000 total pledge). Contributions toward an annual scholarship may be paid annually over the award period (typically four years or more) or an outright gift may be provided for the entire amount.

Endowed

  • An endowed scholarship may be established for the current minimum commitment of $25,000. An endowed scholarship is invested in the University of Montana Foundation’s pooled investment portfolio to provide a predictable stream of support for the scholarship in perpetuity.
  • Contributions toward an endowment may be pledged over a period of up to five years or an outright gift may be provided for the entire amount.
  • Many donors choose to fund the scholarship with an annual gift of $1,000 while building the endowment so scholarship awards may be provided immediately.
  • The Montana Endowment Tax Credit offers incentives for Montanans to make planned gifts to endowed funds.

Establish the scholarship selection criteria:
Examples of scholarship criteria include GPA, financial need, particular area of study, for example “a student in the Wilderness and Civilization Program.” Providing flexible criteria makes it easier to identify and award students.
