Every year, several hundred thousand students and parents are defrauded by scholarship scams. The victims of these scams lose thousands, if not millions, of dollars collectively on an annual basis according to multiple sources. keep an eye out for the following:

  • Application and processing fees.
  • Loan Fees.
  • Guaranteed winnings.
  • "Everybody is eligible" - Scholarships all have selective criteria.
  • Unclaimed aid myth - "Billions of dollars of scholarships go unclaimed every year."
  • "We will apply on your behalf."
  • If you receive an unexpected scholarship check please use caution and never send your personal, including social security number, or banking information. Scholarship checks should be sent to the Financial Aid Office to be deposited into your UM student account.
