Registration Errors

CyberBear alerts students of two types of registration errors:

  1. Errors requiring an override
  2. Errors requiring other action

Overrides are granted at the discretion of instructors and advisors. Overrides must be used to register by the 15th class day.

All overrides expire after the 15th class day. Deadlines are adjusted for shortened part-of-term classes, including all summer classes. See how to add a class after the 15th class day.

Students can view registration overrides in CyberBear by navigating to Student Services > Registration > Prepare for Registration. The override will appear under Permit Override. If no overrides are granted, the Permit Override section will not appear.

Errors that Require an Override

Visit the prerequisite enforcement page for more information on prerequisite requirements.

Consent of the instructor is required for this course. This restriction is put on by the instructor or department.

Students must obtain an override from the instructor in order to add the class at the instructor's discretion.

Not all requests for overrides are approved.

This error occurs when a course is limited to specific majors or minors by the department that offers the course. Only students within those fields of study may register for the class.

If a student of a different major would like to register, the instructor may issue a General Override in CyberBear in order to allow the student to register for the class.

If a student believes that their major is mistakenly left off of the list of permitted majors/minors, they can contact the department chair for assistance.

Students are admitted to specific campuses depending on whether they are classified as a face-to-face student or a distance-only student. Students must take courses offered within their campus, and distance-only students are restricted to online classes.

This error message cannot be overridden without the student switching the campus to which they were admitted.

Use the Distance-Only Change Form to change your status to or from distance-only status. Changing from a distance-only student to a face-to-face student may result in an increase of tuition and fees.

This error occurs when a student tries to register for a class outside of their designated college (i.e. a Mountain Campus student tries to register for a Missoula College-only class, or vice versa).

Mountain Campus students trying to register for a Missoula College course must contact the instructor to request an override.

Missoula College students trying to register for a Mountain Campus course must receive permission from their advisors.

Not all requests for overrides are approved.

The course is restricted to students of a certain class standing (e.g. junior, senior, etc.).

If a student does not meet the required class standing, they must obtain an instructor override in order to register.

Not all requests for overrides are approved.

The course is only open to a certain level.

Levels are coded as:

  • Level 01 = Undergraduate
  • Level 02 = Graduate
  • Level 03 = Law

If you are not in the required level, you must obtain an override from the instructor in order to register for the class.

Not all requests for overrides are approved.

Two classes overlap in their meeting times. In order to register for both classes, the student must obtain an override from the instructor of the second class they are attempting to add.

Not all requests for overrides are approved.

Students must obtain consent from the Davidson Honors College or the instructor in order to add the class.

Please contact the Davidson Honors College for more information.

Not all requests for overrides are approved.

Consent of the instructor is required for this course. This restriction is put on by the instructor or department.

Students must obtain an override from the instructor in order to add the class at the instructor's discretion.

Not all requests for overrides are approved.

The section is full and does not permit waitlisting.

For 500- and 600-level courses, students may obtain a closed override at the discretion of the instructor. Closed overrides become available beginning on the first day of classes and cannot be entered before the semester starts.

Not all requests for overrides are approved.

Errors that Require Other Action

CyberBear does not allow for students to drop down to zero credits in a given semester. If you wish to register for other classes, add those to your schedule first, then drop the other class.

If it is before the semester has started, email registration@umontana.edu to cancel your registration.

If the semester has already begun (1st day and on), submit a Semester Withdrawal Form.

The course is full, but the student has the ability to add to the waitlist.

Classes that have a waitlist cannot be overridden until the first day of class.

Once classes have begun, instructors can provide closed overrides in CyberBear at their discretion. Closed overrides become available beginning on the first day of classes and cannot be entered before the semester starts.

Not all requests for overrides are approved.

The course is full, but the student may add to the waitlist.

Although there appears to be an open seat, the space is reserved for the student at the top of the waitlist who has 72-hours to register.

This course has a co-requisite section linked to a primary section.

The primary section is typically the larger shared lecture, and the co-requisite section is either a smaller lab, discussion, or recitation section.

When registering, the student must register for both the primary section and the linked section at the same time.

For example, BIOL 221 section 01 carries 4 credits. The student must select section 01 and also select one of sections 02 through 05 which carry zero credits.

If the discussion section is full, the student must add themselves to the waitlist of the discussion section. Once a seat opens in the discussion section, the student may then register for both the discussion and the main lecture sections.

When dropping linked courses, students must drop both the lecture and the linked section (recitation, lab, or discussion) at the same time.

Student has already successfully added this particular course and section to their schedule.

The student’s registration time is not yet available. See priority registration for a list of registration times.

Double check to make sure that you have clicked on the appropriate term. Occasionally, students incorrectly select the Law Semester from the drop-down menu instead of the regular semester.

If you believe that you have been classified with the wrong priority registration time, contact your advisor for assistance.

The student must submit an Undergraduate Readmission Application after being absent for two or more years or a Graduate Readmission Application.

If you believe you have been readmitted already, double check that you have selected the correct semester as readmission is specific to the semester.

If you have the correct semester, contact Undergraduate Admissions at (406) 243-6266 or Graduate Admissions at (406) 243-2572.

The student is on academic suspension or they previously canceled their classes for that term.

Students on academic suspension must complete an academic reinstatement plan with their advisor and dean.

If you have previously canceled your registration for the semester and now wish to reregister, email registration@umontana.edu

Another individual is viewing your registration. Typically, this is your advisor or an employee of an administrative office, such as the Registrar's Office, Student Accounts, Financial Aid, etc.

Try again in 10 to 30 minutes.

A new advising PIN is generated for active undergraduate students every autumn and spring semester.

The student must meet with an advisor to obtain their advising PIN. If the PIN provided by your advisor is not working, please get back in touch with your advisor.

The Registrar's Office is not permitted to provide advising PINs.

An undergraduate student is trying to register for more than 21 credits.

The student may either drop a course or contact their academic advisor for a Maximum Credit Override.

Not all requests for Maximum Credit Overrides are approved.

It is past the deadline to add or drop this course, the course has been canceled, or administrative Cyberbear maintenance is taking place.

If it is past the deadline to add or drop the course, use the Course Add/Change/Drop option in the CyberBear Student Services menu to submit a late request.
