What-If Scenarios

The What-If function in Degree Works enables students to test out hypothetical changes to their student record without officially committing the changes.

Filters

Students can create What-If scenarios using the filters below. Note that filters must be added in the following order.

  • Catalog Year
  • Level (Undergraduate, Graduate)
  • Degree Type (Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Associate of Arts, etc.)
  • Major
  • Concentration (optional)
  • Minor (optional)
  • Additional areas of study (optional)
  • Future classes (optional)

Degree Works allows you to enter multiple majors/minors/concentrations if you wish to view multiple What-If scenarios at the same time.

Tip: To enter future classes without changing your major or other information listed above, check the Use Current Curriculum box.

Interpreting Results

After entering the filters above or adding future coursework, click Process at the bottom of the screen to view the results.

The results will appear in the same format as a regular degree audit. The What-If audit will show you the completed requirements and remaining courses needed for the scenario you entered based on your prior coursework and current registration.

Status symbols for degree requirements:

  • Complete - Green check mark
  • In Progress - Blue half circle
  • Prerequisite - Blue clipboard
  • Not complete - Red circle

To switch back to your current curriculum, click the Academic tab next to the What-If tab.

Save a Scenario

Your advisor can view your two most recent What-If audits on their end.

If you would like to refer back to the results of a What-If scenario, your advisor can save the results.

If you would like to share a What-If scenario with your advisor at a later date, you can print the results using the printer icon in the top-right corner of the screen.

Change Your Major

All What-If audits are solely for informational purposes. Running a What-If scenario does not mean you have changed your major.

If you like what you see in a What-If scenario and would like to make the change, contact your advisor to declare or change your major. Your advisor can contact the Registrar's Office on your behalf to update your major.

The same applies to concentrations, minors, certificates, and cohorts.
