Graduate Writing Support
The Writing Center offers services to graduate and professional students from every program, division, and department across campus.
We support all written and oral communication projects, including coursework, theses, dissertations, grant proposals, application materials, conference presentations, or personal projects. We work with you at any stage, from brainstorming to reviewing a draft or practicing a presentation. Whatever your comfort level with writing or public speaking, we welcome you!
Support is available via one-on-one appointments, graduate writing groups, writing retreats, and writing workshops. Review the options below or refer to the menu bar to access our services. Please let us know if you have any trouble finding what you’re looking for!
Our Location
Most of our in-person programming takes place at our tutoring center in the Mansfield Library (main level, room 322). Students have the option to attend any appointment online, and many graduate student writing groups and workshops also have online attendance options.
Drop-in Studio Hours
Daily drop-in studio hours provide a supportive (and supported!) place to work, with a professional consultant available for short consultations or to point you towards options for additional support. If you are unfamiliar with what we do, curious about our programming, or want a place to work alongside others, please stop by! During the semester, studio hours are 1-4pm, Monday through Friday, in room 322 of the Mansfield Library.
Individual Consultations
Individual consultations with our professional tutors and our Graduate Writing Fellows can provide the support you need to navigate common – but often agonizing! – challenges of writing in graduate school. We support all stages of your work on writing assignments, proposals, conference presentations, job applications, capstone projects, theses, and dissertations. You can select a 30 or 60-minute appointment; many graduate students elect to set up recurring appointments. All appointments have an online attendance option.
Appointments are available year-round. Register for an account and sign up for an appointment, or email writingcenter@umontana.edu for assistance with this process. We are always happy to help you connect with a consultant well-equipped to meet your needs.
Writing Workshops
We offer graduate writing workshops each semester. Join us for informative, interactive workshops that address graduate-level writing concerns. Schedule and topics vary from semester to semester.
Visit the graduate workshop page for the latest schedule.
Writing Groups
Throughout the year we host multiple weekly accountability groups designed to help you structure your writing time, connect with other writers, generate momentum and reach your writing goals. For the current schedule and offerings, including summer writing groups, please visit the Graduate Student Writing Groups page. Questions? Email writingcenter@umontana.edu.
Writing Retreats
Jump Start is our four-day, writing-intensive retreat for graduate students working on a research proposal, capstone project, professional paper, manuscript, thesis, or dissertation. We offer Jump Start during winter break and spring break, and host a two-day mini-Jump Start before the start of Fall semester. For upcoming dates please go to the Jump Start Writing Retreat page.
Instructional Support
Are you teaching a writing course this year? Our professional staff can work with you on curriculum structure, writing assignments, and strategies for evaluating student writing. Invite us to come give a Writing Center orientation to your students, or to talk with them about writing in college. We’re here to help you help them write!
Check out our For Course Instructors page and email writingcenter@umontana.edu to request our support.
