Graduate Student Writing Groups

~ community ~ accountability ~ flexibility ~

Come write with us! Community, accountability and setting achievable goals, can help sustain progress on major writing projects. Our weekly writing groups help maximize writing productivity and are designed to help graduate students structure writing time, connect with other writers, generate momentum and reach writing goals.

At each session, a Writing Center staff member will invite participants to briefly share writing goals before a focused work period. At the end of each session, the group reconvenes to briefly share successes or challenges, and articulate next steps.

Each semester, we also offer a half-day planning retreat to help you map out a writing plan for the semester.

SPRING SEMESTER WRITING GROUPS SCHEDULE

Writing groups are held Mondays through Thursdays throughout the semester. All writing groups are hosted by Writing Center staff. Registration will give you access the zoom room writing group for all sessions. Come to one, come to all, or come as you can. The more you attend, the more you’ll write!

Weekly schedule:

  • Mondays and Wednesdays 10-11am
  • Tuesdays and Thursdays 8-9am

SUMMER 2024 WRITING GROUPS START MAY 20!

We know it can be hard to maintain momentum and stick to a writing schedule in the summer. There are so many worthwhile distractions! To help you reach your summer writing goals, the Writing Center will be hosting a half-day session to jump start your summer writing, followed by five weeks of daily drop-in writing space.

Jump Start your Summer Writing: Half-day planning workshop, May 20nd, 9am-12pm. Join us for a 3-hour in-person or online workshop and planning session to make a summer writing plan. Writing Center staff will lead a discussion about goal-setting and scheduling, followed by a chance to map out your summer writing and take steps to put your plan into action!

Five weeks of summer writing, May 21nd - June 21nd, 9am-11am. These drop-in morning writing groups will be held Monday through Thursday (no writing group May 27th).

Important details:

  • Registration will give you access to a single zoom link that will work for ALL Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday writing groups (EXCEPT for Summer Jump Start on Monday, May 20 – which requires a separate registration)
  • All writing groups will be held 9am-11am; feel free to show up for one hour or both, and for whatever days and weeks fit with your schedule
  • 45-minute writing blocks will be followed by breaks to briefly connect and share writing struggles and victories

Finally, we know that scheduling gets tricky in the summer. No one will be taking attendance, but the more you attend, the more you’ll write!

A Note on Writing Groups

Different types of writing groups serve different purposes, and we encourage students to explore alternate formats and to initiate additional writing groups to best meet their individual needs. These can include groups focused on providing peer feedback and support, which differ from accountability groups that emphasize protected and scheduled writing time.

Interested in setting up your own writing group? Feel free to reach out to us to discuss ways to do so, or check out the University of North Carolina’s Writing Group Starter Kit or George Mason University’s Setting Up Your Own Writing Group.
