Steering Committee

Purpose

The primary purpose of the Bitterroot College Program (BCP) Steering Committee is to develop an innovative model for the delivery of responsive and sustainable adult and higher education opportunity to the residents of Ravalli County, Montana. The committee is charged with completing a master plan for the new model by August of 2010.

The secondary purpose of the BCP Steering Committee is to provide guidance and oversight of the University of Montana's operations of the Bitterroot College Program during the committee's planning year.

Members

The BCP Steering Committee has 14 voting members—nine local representatives, three University of Montana (UM) representatives, one Flathead Valley Community College (FVCC) representative, and one Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education (OCHE) representative. Notably, of the nine local representatives, there are two pairs of individuals who share representation, e.g., there are two UM-COT student representatives who share one committee vote, and there are two MSU Extension representatives who share one committee vote.

Online Discussions

The BCP Steering Committee is currently considering whether or not to establish an online discussion forum. While only BCP Steering Committee members would be able to contribute written comments to the online forum, the discussions themselves would be fully viewable in real time to the public via an internet link to the discussion site. Notably, the BCP Steering Committee's online discussions would be limited to information sharing and research commentary, with decision-making explicitly excluded from all online discussions.

To facilitate the online discussions, the BCP Steering Committee is exploring the Ning online social networking platform, a format which targets specialized membership bases.
