Admissions

Admission Application Instructions

  • Applying for admission to either credential in the graduate program in Philosophy is a two-step process:

First: Complete the Online Application.

Fill out the online application. There are three steps involved in the application process.

  1. Fill out and submit the Graduate Program portion of the application that comes up when you click the above link. An email will be sent to you with a link to setup your account and finish your application.
  2. Click the link in your email and complete the rest of the application fields and submit.
  3. You will be directed to your application status portal. You will be able to pay your application fee and upload supplemental materials on this page. You will also receive another email with a link to this page so you can log in later and complete these steps and track your application progress.

As part of this process, applicants must do the following:

  1. Self-report all colleges and universities attended (including grade point average);
  2. Request 3 letters of recommendation (online recommendations are preferred);
  3. Upload a statement of purpose (100-300 words) describing your background, research interests, professional goals, and reasons for choosing the Department of Philosophy at the University of Montana. Please specify in your statement of purpose which degree track you are applying for: M.A. in Environmental Philosophy or M.A. in Philosophy;
  4. Upload a writing sample that demonstrates your philosophical abilities;
  5. International Students will need to provide TOEFL Scores
  6. Pay the application fee.

Second: Request Official Scores and Transcripts. 

  1. International students please have your official TOEFL scores be sent to the University of Montana using code 4489
  2. Request that official transcripts be sent to the Department of Philosophy from all colleges and universities you have attended (excluding University of Montana).  Transcripts may also be transmitted electronically through the National Student Clearinghouse.

Application Deadline

  • Fall Semester - rolling admissions. 

Assistanship Deadline

  • Students who wish to be considered for teaching assistantships, fellowships or scholarships must apply for Fall admission and submit a complete application packet by February 1. 
  • Assistantships are not available for students in the environmental ethics graduate certificate
