Admission

ADMISSION APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

  • Applying for admission to the graduate program in Geosciences is a two-step process:

First: Complete the Online Application

Fill out the online application. There are three steps involved in the application process.

  1. Fill out and submit the Graduate Program portion of the application that comes up when you click the above link. An email will be sent to you with a link to setup your account and finish your application.
  2. Click the link in your email and complete the rest of the application fields and submit.
  3. You will be directed to your application status portal. You will be able to pay your application fee and upload supplemental materials on this page. You will also receive another email with a link to this page so you can log in later and complete these steps and track your application progress.

As part of this process, applicants must do the following:

  1. Self-report all colleges and universities attended (including grade point average).
  2. Submit 3 letters of recommendation.
  3. Upload a statement of purpose (300 words) describing your background and future goals.
  4. Complete Form A (available from the Geosciences Department or their website
  5. Upload resume.
  6. Pay the application fee.

Note:  The Statement of Purpose, Form A, and resume can be uploaded as one combined document on the Graduate School online application site section entitled “Resume Upload”. These can also be sent directly to the Department’s Graduate Coordinator.

Second: Request Official Transcripts:

  1. Request that official transcripts be sent to the Department of Geosciences from all colleges and universities you have attended (excluding University of Montana - an unofficial transcript can be provided). Transcripts may also be transmitted electronically through a digital credential service.

ADMISSION DEADLINES

  • Fall Semester - Admissions are made once per year, with a January 17 submission deadline to begin enrollment the following fall semester. Teaching assistantships are awarded during this admissions cycle.
  • Spring Semester - Applications are considered to begin enrollment during the spring semester on a space-available basis.  Please contact the department directly before applying outside of the normal admissions cycle.
