Sanitation Strategies

I.  Purpose

The purpose of this standard operating procedure is to have the most effective chemical sanitation program that encompasses support, communication, program safety, and mixing/application expertise.

Sanitation Strategies will implement the AchieveClean program including 28 point inspection on every service visit (4 times each calendar year). Cage Washer
operations and proportions will be examined and areas of concern will be
 identified in a report and communicated to management.

  • Management will have a better awareness of washer operations and sanitation results

 Service reports will be available in the ServStar Sanitation Data Management
 System for 24/7/365 access

  • Trending can easily be charted for comparative purposes
  • Audit preparation anxiety is reduced
  • Disinfectant concentrations will be checked and reported each visit
  • Effective, safe, and reliable training program for employees reducing the potential for chemical accidents
  • Reduced liability for the University of Montana
  • Reduced chemical waste
  • Sanitation Strategies will loan and install water-driven proportioning equipment to facilitate the proper and safe use of chemicals
  • Sanitation Strategies will perform ATP testing of animal equipment exiting the washers and 28 point inspection process for all cage washing equipment.
  • Sanitation Strategies owned equipment will be serviced and parts replaced at no charge to UM
  • UM will purchase and use Sanitation Strategies detergents and supplies
  • Cage washer equipment operation deficiencies will be noted in the service report for vendor service technicians

  • LabSan 230C-cage washer
  • LabSan pH control-cage washer

II.  Directions for Use: All LAR staff must have chemical detergent training

 Personal Protective Equipment- staff must have a “spotter” when opening and 
 moving chemical drums to animal labs. Clipboard in HS009 office to check off
 proper PPE and inventory of chemicals. The following PPE must be worn and used
 to move chemicals:

  • Safety glasses/face mask
  • Lab coat
  • Chemical safe gloves are worn by the person pushing the cart.  The 'spotter" wears regular lab gloves
  • Barrel hand cart designed to secure 30-gallon barrels

First Aid: Safety Data Sheets (SDS) posted in HS010 and in SDS notebooks

  • Wash hands thoroughly after handling
  • If on the skin, wash with soap and water
  • Take off contaminated clothing and wash before reusing
  • If in eyes, rinse eyes at eyewash station for 15-20 minutes. Seek medical attention if irritation persists
  • Call 243-6131 to report a spill to Environmental Health 
  • HS 010 has a spill kit for clean-up.

***Sanitation Strategies provides 'Serve/Train' which is an on-line training program for LAR
     staff and they provide an annual in-house training program for LAR staff
