Are you or your department sponsoring University-run or -affiliated programs and activities that involve interactions with minors?

If you answered “Yes” then this communication applies to you.

The University of Montana is committed to the safety of all individuals in its community and particularly has concern for those who are potentially vulnerable and require special attention and protection. The information in this message serves as a reminder of best practices and procedures to be followed with the goal of promoting the safety and wellbeing of all involved.

Below are highlights of best practices to review with your staff and volunteers before your activities occur. This also applies to non-University organizations and entities that operate programs or activities involving minors on campus. University agreements with such organizations and entities shall also reflect that they have best practices in place.

All best practices include documentation and supervision:

• Develop clear and concise policies and procedures for interactions with minors.
• Perform a risk assessment of your program and activities.
• Conduct quality screening of all your staff and volunteers.
• Require mandatory orientation and training to include:
  • Instruction on child safety rules and conduct requirements;
  • Responsibilities under Montana’s law for mandatory reporting of child abuse and neglect; and
  • Program emergency preparedness plans.
• Make sure appropriate insurance, risk transfers and consent forms are in place.
