A teacher librarian, often called a school library media specialist, has many roles including teacher, instructional partner, information specialist, and program administrator. Through these roles, a teacher librarian provides access to information, instruction in information skills, and recommendations for instructional planning. They are an integral part of every educational community.
The mission of the K-12 Teacher Librarian program is to produce high-caliber teacher librarians and media/information technology specialists who will comfortably fill all of the roles in the library and to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. This mission is accomplished by:
- Providing intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats;
- Providing instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing, and using information/ideas;
- Working with other educators to design learning strategies to meet the needs of individual students.
Teacher Librarian Program Admission
You must be accepted into the Teacher Education Program to enroll in the Teacher Librarian Certificate Program. If you are currently in the Teacher Education Program, pleae consult with your College of Education academic advisor.
- Apply to UM as a degree-seeking post-baccalaureate student, as applicable.
- Complete and submit the program-specific Application Packet to the department via email at edadvising@mso.umt.edu. Submit two letters of recommendation using the attached form.
Graduate-level Certificate
Available for anyone wanting to complete the program for graduate credit, but not a full master’s degree.
- Apply to the Graduate School at UM via the online application portal.
- In the listings in the application, select Enrollment Status: Degree Seeking (includes certificates), Major: Teaching & Learning Library Media Education Certificate, Degree: Post Baccalaureate/Graduate Certificate.
- Submit/upload the materials as listed in the Graduate School portal.
M.Ed. with the Library option
Available for anyone wanting to complete a master's degree with a Teacher Librarian Certificate
- Apply to the Graduate School at UM via the online application portal.
- In the listings in the application, select: Enrollment Status: Degree Seeking (includes certificates), Major: Teaching & Learning (MEd), Degree: Master of Education, Concentration: Teacher Librarian.
- Submit/upload the materials as listed in the Graduate School portal.
