Kickstart your career journey with the Griz Career Skills Program– your fast track to gaining some seriously impressive career skills.  The program will boost your abilities in the areas that are in the highest demand among employers across industries - professionalism, communication, critical thinking, and teamwork.  Not only will you master these skills, but we’ll also coach you on how to package and present your newfound talents for future careers in any field.

Perks of Completion 

  • Earn digital badges and a certificate (no academic relation) to add to your resume and LinkedIn profile.
  • Make progress at your own pace through this asynchronous program.
  • Many campus departments will allow you to complete this program during work hours.  Just ask your supervisor!
  • Gain confidence in the skills you’re gaining in and out of the classroom and learn how to effectively articulate them to future employers.
  • Those who complete the program by April 2024 will be invited to a celebration.

What to Expect 

The program is offered asynchronously through Moodle and can be done at your own pace.  Each module offers a combination of videos, articles, reflective assignments, case studies, and tools to help you apply the principles learned to your current work activities. You will also receive guidance to help articulate relevant skills in the job search.  At the end of each module, we will ask for your feedback so we can continuously improve the student experience. 

Earn a digital badge for completing each of the following modules (each requiring about 2 hours of work):  

In-person orientations will be held in September.  A virtual version of the content will be available year-round.

  • Overview of the Griz Career Skills Certificate Program 
  • Understanding the UM Career Skills 
  • Assessing Your Current Skills and Areas for Growth 
  • Tracking Accomplishments 

Topics covered: 

  • Your personal brand 
  • Identifying skills gaps 
  • Contributing to a positive work environment 

Topics covered: 

  • Effective communication at work 
  • Importance of non-verbal communication 
  • Practice interviewing or public speaking

Topics covered: 

  • Problem-solving and decision making 
  • Anticipating needs and prioritization 
  • Consider the big picture and implications for others 

Topics covered: 

  • Conflict management 
  • Leveraging strengths of self and others 
  • Effective collaboration and compromise 

Topics covered:  

  • Assessment of strengths 
  • Developing a career plan 
  • Building professional relationships 
  • Creating resumes, cover letters, and online profiles 

After completing the entire program, you’ll receive a digital meta-badge and certificate of completion (no academic relation), as well as an invitation to celebrate your achievement. 

If you’re completing the program as part of your campus employment, you are encouraged to discuss what you’re learning with your supervisor, who will also be provided with materials to help incorporate the content of the program into supervision conversations and reflections on work assignments. 

Who can participate?  

  • All registered UM students and degree-seeking Missoula and Bitterroot College students are eligible to participate. 
  • Participants must complete the program before graduation to receive the certificate and meta-badge.
