External Scholarships and Grants

 The following are scholarship opportunities that have been brought to our attention to pass along further to students. If you know of a scholarship that can be added below, please email GoAbroad@mso.umt.edu with details.

ISEP funding and resources:

  • ISEP Founders Fellowship -- Students are eligible for this fellowship if they are from any ISEP member university and have demonstrated financial need. The ISEP Founders Fellowship focuses on language learning in a host culture.
  • ISEP Community Scholarships -- Students are eligible for this scholarship if they are from any ISEP member university and have demonstrated financial need. The ISEP Community Scholarship supports ISEP's mission of extending access and affordability of study abroad to all students in the university consortium.
  • Annette Kade Scholarship -- Students are eligible for this scholarship if they are a student an ISEP member university in the U.S. and are planning to study in French or German at a member institution in Austria, France, Germany, Reunion Island or Switzerland. These scholarships are available to students with a demonstrated financial need and an expressed interest in learning French or German while studying abroad.
  • Scholarships from ISEP member institutions -- Several members of the ISEP network offer institutional scholarships to incoming international students that are open to students on ISEP programs.
  • Outside scholarships and financial resources -- ISEP also offers guidance about scholarships and financial resources administered by outside entities.

Phi Kappa Phi Award:

Phi Kappa Phi award:  Undergraduates with a GPA of 3.75 or above and have been accepted to a study abroad program.

DIWC Scholarship:

DIWC Scholarship: The Diverse International Women Of Color Study Abroad Scholarship is intended to assist women of color who are exceptional in their studies and in need of financial assistance to study abroad.

DIWC will award (5) $500 scholarships to women of color who have been accepted to a In-Person Summer Study Abroad Program.

DIWC will award (2) $250 scholarships to women of color who have been accepted to a Virtual Summer Study Abroad Program.

 

Critical Language Scholarship (CLS):

Critical Languages Scholarship: A program of United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) institutes provide fully-funded group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks in Arabic, Persian (Advanced beginning, intermediate and advanced levels), Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Punjabi, Turkish, and Urdu (Beginning, intermediate and advanced levels), and Chinese, Japanese, and Russian (Intermediate and advanced levels).

Freeman-ASIA:

Freeman- ASIA : The Freeman-ASIA program is designed to support U.S.-based undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. The program’s goal is to increase the number of U.S. citizens and permanent residents with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures.

Asia-Pacific Academic:

APA believes that international programs can broaden students’ perspectives by adapting to the globalized world by experiencing an intercultural study environment. Therefore, APA offers various scholarship programs to create opportunities and enable more students to study abroad in Asia-Pacific.

Make our Planet Great Again:

Make Our Planet Great Again Grants & FundingMake Our Planet Great Again is a call to students to mobilize and join France to lead the fight against global warming. Awards grants to pursue a master's degree in France (1 or 2 years), co-financing of PhD programs in France (3 years), co-financing of postdoctoral research contracts (1 to 2 years), & funding of short research stays (14 days to 5 months) for PhD students.

The Fund for Education Abroad:

The Fund for Education Abroad: STA Travel Start the Adventure Scholarship is available for students who plan to study abroad for a minimum of 4 weeks or more. Scholarships are available for students who are currently enrolled at University of Montana. Preference is given to students who demonstrate financial need, are first-generation college students, or of minority background.

Fulbright Scholarship:

Fulbright: Grants from the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, for individually designed study/research projects on English Teaching Assistantships.

Gilman Scholarship:

Gilman Scholarships: Awards up to $5,000 from the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, for students receiving a Federal Pell Grant and studying abroad for semester, academic year, or summer. Students studying a critical need language are eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement.

WSA's Cultural Bridge Scholarship:

WSA’s Cultural Bridge Scholarship: WSA’s Cultural Bridge Scholarship was designed to help defray the cost of the international student experience, and $500 is distributed to worthy applicants three times a year (Spring/Summer/Fall semesters).

Richard Drake Writing Award:

The Richard Drake Writing Award honors excellence in writing in the humanities in the College of Humanities and Sciences, and is awarded to one undergraduate and one graduate student per year. Papers focusing on history, literature, philosophy, religion, politics and the classics are considered. Papers are judged on the basis of excellence in writing, imagination in research, and force of argument.

The application should include a letter of recommendation from the UM faculty member in whose class you wrote the paper. The letter of recommendation should include an overview of the assignment and a sense of what stood out in regards to the paper.

Voyager Scholarship

The Voyager Scholarship helps students pursuing careers in public service by providing access to travel and education. The Voyager Scholarship is administered by the Obama Foundation. Airbnb will provide accommodations and other support to participants. Application and scholarship disbursement is administered by Scholarship America. The program is funded by a $100 million personal contribution from Brian Chesky, Airbnb Co-Founder and CEO.
