Grant Information

Offered each academic year and funded by the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) Grant presents instructors with a unique opportunity to develop and offer a COIL module in an existing course during the academic year. Instructors will design collaborative projects or assignments to virtually connect students from the courses at UM and a partner institution over a period of at least four weeks. COIL activities should support regular course objectives while also enabling students to examine topics from varied cultural and societal perspectives. Examples of activities include shared readings, small group discussions and group projects. Student collaboration may be synchronous or asynchronous, as long as the technology used to connect students supports the goals for student learning.

The grant provides a $1,000 stipend to the instructor and instructional design support to develop a COIL module with an instructor from an international partner institution. The Global Engagement Office provides partnership matching and administrative support as needed.

Eligibility

  • Instructors must be employees of the University of Montana (if course is co-taught, award can be split between instructors).
  • Courses can be at the undergraduate or graduate level.

Instructors will be selected on a rolling basis to develop their COIL module in partnership with the Global Engagement Office, an instructional designer, and faculty member from the partner institution.

DEADLINE:  Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.  Please email your completed proposal as a PDF file to global.engagement@umontana.edu with the subject line reading “(Your Last Name)_COIL Grant.”
