UMOVE - University of Montana Online Virtual Exchange

What is COIL?

Collaboration Online International Learning (COIL) combines four essential dimensions of real virtual mobility:

  • Collaborative exercise of teachers and students;
  • Makes use of online technology and interaction;
  • Has potential international dimensions; and
  • Is integrated into the learning process (deWit, 2013)

COIL is not:

  • A replacement for study abroad
  • A massive open online course (MOOC) or online course
  • A curriculum
  • Teleconferencing
  • A technology platform
  • Software

 COIL is:

  • Team teaching across two or more cultures using online communication
  • Structured so the success of students in each class depends upon the others’
  • Customized, to fit the mission, culture, and learning outcomes of each institution
  • Applicable to any discipline

 What does a COIL project look like?

  • In Fall 2020, a four-week collaboration between students from UM’s Costume Design class and Sophia University’s Art History class for the first COIL collaboration at UM
    • Topic: the Western imagination of Japan through exploration of Puccini’s opera, Madama Butterfly, and Butterfly, a late 20th-century Broadway play
    • Content Delivery: weekly Zoom meetings, online forum discussions, readings and videos posted in Moodle, and a collaborative group project
