AAUW Salary Negotiation Online Workshop

Available at any time online

AAUW Work Smart is designed to help you negotiate for a new job, raise, or promotion.  Learn how to research your target salary, highlight your accomplishments and find the right words— and the confidence— to negotiate for better benefits and pay. American women earn only 80 percent of their male counterparts, a pay gap of 20 percent. Black and Hispanic women earn even less. While the pay gap results from many factors — including discrimination — gender differences in salary negotiation play a role. Men are four times more likely to negotiate their starting salary, and negotiations on average result in higher pay. In the online workshop, you’ll learn:

  • How to identify and articulate your personal value
  • How to develop an arsenal of persuasive responses and other negotiation strategies, including how to get a raise or promotion
  • How to conduct objective market research to benchmark a target salary and benefits
  • About the wage gap, including its long-term consequences

On campus training

Tribal Community Workshop

CIS believes in the efficacy of the Indigenous Mentoring Program (IMP) and wants to provide an opportunity for faculty, staff, and administrators to take their education and training a step further through our Tribal Community Workshop (TCW).

CIS is offering a two-day place-based workshop in which faculty, staff, and administrators will visit a Montana Tribal Territory and gain valuable local knowledge. Tribal members will present their views on STEM education and community issues. These workshops will provide UM participants with connection to tribal communities in Montana and further understanding of their mission for Indigenous students while creating opportunities for collaboration.

The TCW will be held once in the spring semester of each academic year and accommodate up to 15 applicants.

UM Allies training

The goal of the University of Montana Allies Program (UM Allies) is to promote a campus environment that is inclusive and supportive of all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. This training will include discussions and activities, information about privilege, oppression, and the LGBTQ community, and tips for how to be an effective ally. Participants will also receive a training manual that includes definitions, resource materials, and referral information for programs and services in the community. UM Allies is an opportunity for UM staff and faculty to take a prominent and active role in fostering and upholding a culture of safety and inclusion at UM.

UM Academic Advising Certificate Program

Participants will learn about historical and theoretical foundations of advising, different approaches or strategies of academic advising today, UM-specific policies and procedures relevant to advising, various tools available to UM advisors, and support services and resources available to UM students.  In addition, participants will have the opportunity to learn about specialized advising services for various diverse communities of students and other topics relevant to advising. These trainings provide great introductions to advising for faculty or staff members who do official or unofficial advising on a daily basis in their positions and need a refresher.  The trainings are also useful for those who are interested in advancing into a professional academic advising position at UM. Participants who complete the required trainings and specialized advising services trainings will be awarded a certificate of completion and a digital badge.

“Beyond the Lab” Research Explorer Program & Travel Fund

Advance your research and funding potential by identifying applied research opportunities and receive travel funds to help uncover real-world research application potential. Travel funds can be used by faculty or to send student research collaborators in the STEM Sciences to professional meetings and conferences. To qualify for travel funds, the faculty member or student must actively participate in and complete the UM Research Explorer Program (supported by the NSF I-Corps program). The program will provide training and coaching to help students, researchers, and innovators identify target markets, conduct market research, and evaluate market readiness. Request more information today, space is limited. Contact sarah.truglio@mso.umt.edu with questions.

Pedagogy Project

Founded in 2009, the Pedagogy Project is a faculty-led and initiated effort originating out of the College of Humanities and Sciences to encourage conversation and reflections about teaching at UM.  With support from the Office of Organizational Learning and Development, Pedagogy Project participants partner across UM colleges and departments to provide midterm feedback for each other through Small Group Analyses and Classroom Observations.  This feedback enriches the teaching and learning experiences for faculty and students due to its timing in the midst of a course and the anonymity of the process.  In addition, the Pedagogy Project provides a forum for faculty to reflect on their experiences, building a repertoire of resources to enhance pedagogy at UM. For further information, visit the Pedagogy Project website.
