Mushtaq Al Rashidany (2010-12)

I came to do my Master’s degree at the Linguistics Program as a Fulbright Exchange student. Before landing in Missoula, I knew nothing about this program and the University of Montana. I was a little nervous, but I soon discovered how lucky I was to be placed at this great program. To say the least, my experience as a graduate student there was one of a kind. The amount of knowledge and training I gained while doing my Master’s degree there was enormous! It was an eye-opening experience that has carved its sweet memories in my mind for the rest of my life. I had the honor to be the student of some of the most qualified professors in their field. I remember going through some tough times during my study and great difficulties that I had to deal with, but my professors were always there to help me and provide me with sufficient guidance. They really helped me get the best of my qualifications and capabilities. I owe them so much! Furthermore, the colleagues I got to meet there quickly welcomed me and helped me become part of their “dream team”, which I like to call them. The Linguistics Club was not short of exciting activities, academic and otherwise, the entire time I was studying at the program. It was there that I got the first opportunity to present about my home country, hometown and culture there in a talk that drew a huge, supportive audience. It was the kickstart of many cultural presentations I proudly gave on campus throughout my two-year study. My rich experience at the Linguistics Program also inspired me to write a comic “play” featuring a love story whose characters were linguistics elements I got to learn about through the interesting classes I took there. I was presented with a lot of opportunities that really enriched my experience at this program and at the university of Montana in general, and the Missoula wonderful community where everyone would make you feel like home. Furthermore, the Foreign Student Office on campus always has a lot of activities for foreign students to make them feel welcome.
