Mathematics Education

The Department of Mathematical Sciences has a very active group of mathematics educators who study mathematics learning from cognitive and sociocultural perspectives, and whose research interests lie in the areas of cognition, identity, pedagogy, curriculum development, creativity, psychology, history and philosophy of mathematics, mathematical modeling, gifted education, equity, social justice, assessment, and technology. This group offers coursework in mathematics content and pedagogy for undergraduate students seeking state licensure to teach mathematics in K-12 school settings.  They also offer graduate coursework in mathematics education in the areas of curriculum, learning theories and research for students seeking masters and doctoral degrees.

The group organizes a mathematics education seminar that meets weekly to discuss emerging research and current topics in mathematics education. The mathematics education faculty has been involved in many projects with external funding from sources such as the National Science Foundation, the Department of Education, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the American Institute of Mathematics, and Title II.
