Faculty is responsible for creating and maintaining an accessible learning environment, while at the same time maintaining academic standards.

How to Help a Student of Concern
Learn more about how to manage difficult situations and behavioral signs that warrant concern, as well as resources for assisting students in accessing resources and services at the University of Montana.

Inclusivity Resources
OOLD has identified some resources on fighting racism, inclusive teaching, equity in the workplace, and facilitating conversations that we have found helpful. We invite members of the campus community to add to or critique this list and share what you have been reading, watching, and listening to.

Implicit Bias
Implicit or unconscious bias leads to microaggressions, attitudinal barriers, and discrimination. Unconscious biases toward disabilities are pervasive and influence negative attitudes, words, and behaviors that exclude people with disabilities. We have found the following resources that are helpful in increasing awareness and minimizing biases

Mindful Minutes
Brief 5-10-minute skill-based sessions focusing on ways to reduce stress, increase resilience, and improve mental well-being in the classroom.

Syllabus Language
A simple way to support both the mental health of students and campus suicide prevention efforts is
to include a brief statement about this on your course syllabus. This helps promote help-seeking
behaviors and demonstrates that instructors care about student well-being.

Request a Training
In support of a safe and welcoming campus environment, a number of trainings can be requested through SARC.

Referring Students to Office for Disability Equity
Faculty and staff are encouraged to refer students, who may meet the definition of a disability or may have an undiagnosed disability, to us. Please advise students to reach out to us online, by email, or by phone. Learn more about students connecting with us.
The Office for Disability Equity does not offer disability evaluation. However, we provide a list of practitioners in the Missoula area so that students can seek documentation of a disability.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
Designing accessible and inclusive educational content is proactive and welcoming for a diverse range of students. Good course design can give students a better opportunity to gain knowledge, skills, and motivation for learning. To lessen the need for separate accommodations for disabled students, build common disability accommodations into the course.

Mental Health Supportive resources for Faculty and Staff
The Mission of the University of Montana Counseling Services is to facilitate student success through a focus on mental health and well-being. We assist students in identifying challenges and developing skills that empower them to develop broader insight and create positive change in their lives.
