The Office of Public Safety is responsible for the protection
of lives and property within the boundaries of the University. The department
responds to all crime-related activities and operates crime prevention
and safety programs. The department is also responsible for traffic control
and campus parking; including bicycle, bus, vanpool, and carpool programs.
The department is responsible for all campus locksmith work and key control.
In addition, the office issues campus keys to individual faculty, staff,
and students.
Public Safety: Officers patrol all areas of The University
of Montana, including University Villages, both units of the College of
Technology as well as the main campus. The officers are all graduates
of the Montana Law Enforcement Academy and have received State of Montana
certification. This unit is responsible for safety and security at major
public events held on campus. Officers conduct traffic enforcement, criminal
investigation, crime prevention programs, money escorts, and alarm response.
In addition, officers respond to all calls for medical assistance.
Parking Services: The administrative staff provides
control and supervision of the campus parking programs. Included within
their purview are the following: issue and account for all parking permits;
supervise the student ticket writer program; provide online access to
the state and national crime computers; provide dispatch function to assist
the officers in the performance of their duties; and provide a center
for issuing parking permits and accepting payment for parking fines.
Keyshop: This craft shop maintains locks, cuts keys,
and produces the majority of campus engraving products. Emergency lockouts
and safe repairs are also handled out of this shop.
Safety Services: Under the leadership of the Public
Safety Director, this collective group of employees provide guidance to
the University for compliance with the Montana Safety Culture Act and
to ensure that all employees adhere to safe work practices. Information
is provided by telephone, safety hazard reports, training sessions, and
a variety of informational publications. Information about these services

Escort Student Patrol: Under the guidance of the
Office of Public Safety, the escort student patrol operates a student
managed and staffed service created to provide safe and personal escorts
for students, staff, and faculty whose jobs or duties require them to
traverse the University campus during the evening and early-morning hours.
