The Office of Public Safety is responsible for the protection of lives and property within the boundaries of the University. The department responds to all crime-related activities and operates crime prevention and safety programs. The department is also responsible for traffic control and campus parking; including bicycle, bus, vanpool, and carpool programs. The department is responsible for all campus locksmith work and key control. In addition, the office issues campus keys to individual faculty, staff, and students.

Public Safety: Officers patrol all areas of The University of Montana, including University Villages, both units of the College of Technology as well as the main campus. The officers are all graduates of the Montana Law Enforcement Academy and have received State of Montana certification. This unit is responsible for safety and security at major public events held on campus. Officers conduct traffic enforcement, criminal investigation, crime prevention programs, money escorts, and alarm response. In addition, officers respond to all calls for medical assistance.

Parking Services: The administrative staff provides control and supervision of the campus parking programs. Included within their purview are the following: issue and account for all parking permits; supervise the student ticket writer program; provide online access to the state and national crime computers; provide dispatch function to assist the officers in the performance of their duties; and provide a center for issuing parking permits and accepting payment for parking fines.

Keyshop: This craft shop maintains locks, cuts keys, and produces the majority of campus engraving products. Emergency lockouts and safe repairs are also handled out of this shop.

Safety Services: Under the leadership of the Public Safety Director, this collective group of employees provide guidance to the University for compliance with the Montana Safety Culture Act and to ensure that all employees adhere to safe work practices. Information is provided by telephone, safety hazard reports, training sessions, and a variety of informational publications. Information about these services can be further accessed via The University of Montana homepage.

Escort Student Patrol: Under the guidance of the Office of Public Safety, the escort student patrol operates a student managed and staffed service created to provide safe and personal escorts for students, staff, and faculty whose jobs or duties require them to traverse the University campus during the evening and early-morning hours.
