Our Values

We respect, welcome, encourage and celebrate the differences among us; we value, seek, and rely on diversity in all its forms, including racial, linguistic, economic, and educational diversity. We recognize the potential for all people to learn, change, and to contribute to our communities, and we believe that collaborative learning best promotes this type of growth. Our values align with the University of Montana's Priorities for Action and provide a framework for our daily work.

PLACE STUDENT SUCCESS AT THE CENTER OF ALL WE DO

We provide all students access to support at every phase of their learning. We celebrate risk-taking and experimentation. We take a reflective stance, using assessment as a tool for meaningful adjustment in our approaches to supporting students.

DRIVE EXCELLENCE AND INNOVATION IN TEACHING, LEARNING AND RESEARCH

We work and learn across disciplinary and institutional boundaries to support the development of scholarly work from conception to submission. We act as a critical campus hub for knowledge creation, connection, collaboration, and communication. We support excellence in the teaching of writing, learning of writing, and research into best writing center practices and programs to support our campus community.

EMBODY THE PRINCIPLE OF "MISSION FIRST, PEOPLE ALWAYS"

We honor and support the unique individual and individual voice of each writer we work with. We respect the courage it takes to share one's work with others. We aspire to practice honesty, trustworthiness, and academic integrity, and to promote justice, learning, individual success, and service.

PARTNER WITH PLACE

We acknowledge that we are in the aboriginal territories of the Salish and Kalispel people, and honor the path they have shown us in caring for place.

We honor the complex legacy of individual and institutional connection with place, and strive to support work that matters for the University, for our community, and for Montana. We view partnerships—with students, faculty, staff, alumni and community—as a critical tool for cultivating positive change.

PROUDLY TELL THE UM STORY

We empower the diverse voices of UM to showcase the incredible work that happens on campus every day. We support all forms of communication that enable University of Montana students, faculty, alumni and staff to proudly share their research, their ideas, their visions, their voice and their stories with the broader community.
