Well-Being Support Coordinators
Master Level Social Work students who are working in partnership with UM Wellness and Leadership to provide prevention support for well-being related issues for students.
Please note these services are provided by health coaches. These coaches’ function in a non-clinical capacity and they are not licensed mental health providers.
What services do we provide?
- 1:1 well-being support for students in person or via zoom
- Training and support for faculty/staff on ways to support student well-being
- Assist students in accessing resources on and off campus
What is an appropriate referral?
- Support in coping with stress, anxiety, and feeling overwhelmed
- Sleep and Sleep hygiene
- Time Management and Procrastination
- Movement and Nutrition
- Assistance with finding the right resource for support

Health Coaching consists of informal, confidential meetings with a professional Health Coach. Health Coaching is designed to help students improve their overall health and academic success. Health Coaching meetings are supported by the health coach and self-directed by the client areas of desired improvement like stress, sleep, exercise, nutrition, and more.
Learning how to live a balanced, lower stress lifestyle will help you succeed at UM academically and interpersonally. Health Coaches help you gain academic success whether it's managing time, assignments, or personal relationships. Being well enables students to focus on what matters and less on distractions.
Health Coaching is FREE and students can have up to 12 sessions in the academic year.

The Wellness Wall is located outside of the Wellness office in the Curry Health Center. The Wellness Wall is home to the Condom Corner & Safe Sex Supplies, Emergency Period Essentials, & Stress Busting Kits. All of the Wellness Wall supplies are free to UM Students.

Need help managing stress?
Fill out this request form or a specific order or stop by the Wellness Office lobby to take your pick off the Wellness Wall. Inside the kit you will receive goodies and information on stress management techniques like aromatherapy, breathing, time management and more.
University of Montana has a Tobacco Free Campus and Curry Health Center Wellness offers FREE Nicotine Quit Kits to support UM students who wish to quit vaping or e-cigarettes, smoking or smokeless tobacco (chew).
Each quit kit recipient also receives a brief cessation session to help personalize the kit to individual needs and create a quit plan to break your unwanted habits.

The Relaxation Station is a free service to students where you can book a 15–45-minute relaxation getaway from all the ‘get up and go’. When you book the relaxation station you can request to have the room set-up for you in any of the following ways. Please note that after each room use, everything is thoroughly sanitized.
- Meditation (mat, blanket and/or pillow included)
- Progressive breathing and other breath techniques
- Relaxing stretching (mat and blanket included)
- Lead yoga
- Relaxing music
- “Happy light” (sun lamp)
- Coloring sheets
- Digital Detox room

Mental Health Training: Kognito : A Virtual, Interactive On-line Mental Health Training Kognito is a 45-minute, web-based training simulation module to train students, faculty, and staff in recognizing signs of mental health issues, distress, and suicide, as well as how to communicate with and refer at-risk students. The module can be accessed from home or office and completed at their convenience.
1. What is Kognito? The Kognito simulation is designed to enhance the mental health literacy of all individuals who work with people who maybe distressed. The interactive simulation provides practice conversations through role-plays with virtual students and may be completed at the user’s desired pace. The simulation teaches users how to recognize the signs of emotional distress, initiate a conversation leveraging evidence-based communication strategies and how to make a referral to support services
2. Why is The University of Montana using Kognito for this training? The training, which is already in use at hundreds of colleges and universities around the country, was created with mental health experts and educators. It is listed in the Suicide Prevention Resource Center’s Best Practices. The Montana University System purchased the rights to use Kognito for 3 years with Cares Act money for all colleges in the MUS to help schools address the increasing mental health needs of the University.
3. What is the time commitment - pre, training & post? The training requires a one- hour time commitment. Comprised of approximately 45 minutes for the self-paced simulation and an additional 5 to 8 minutes for some post-training follow up surveys
4. Who can take the Kognito training? All students, faculty, and staff at UM. Please note that there is a different training for student’s vs faculty staff.
5. Why now? The JED Foundation and Active Minds both indicate that 60% of college students report that their mental health has worsened during the pandemic. The Center for Collegiate Mental Health reports that 85% of students nationally have experienced significant mental health impacts in at least one area of their lives including academics, loneliness and isolation, career development, basic needs insecurity, relationships, and finances. According to UM’s Spring 2021 National College Health Assessment, 47% of UM students reported moderate to serious levels of psychological distress – an 8% increase since before the COVID pandemic. Additionally, on a national level, only 40% of students with mental health concerns actually seek help.
6. Is the training mandatory? This training is not mandatory and no consequences or holds will be placed on student’s accounts.
7. How should I prep my students and or staff for this training? This training maybe triggering to folks who have experienced personal mental health challenges. You can prep your students and staff for this training by giving them a warning ahead of time that the content of the simulation talks about mental health challenges. Remind people that they can choose to not take the training and that if they do decide to take the training, they can stop at any time. Furthermore, mental health support resources are provided to participants at the end of the training. We also encourage you to communicate that this training is not mandatory and if they are concerned about it being triggering for them they, can opt out.
8. If we complete the training, is there a way staff can indicate they have done so? Yes, we will provide a Kognito graphic for email signatures to all campus professionals who complete the training.

YOU @ UM
The purpose of the YOU@UM portal is to connect students with campus resources and other online educational tools to increase University of Montana student success. The innovative digital tool promotes self- reflection, allowing students to be more proactive with their health and well-being in order to make the most of their college experience.
Students can complete brief assessments and create their profile in order to customize content. Users can set goals and check them off once completed, peruse useful and relatable content, or search for something specific.
Using the portal, students can explore their strengths and areas for growth across three domains:
- SUCCEED = Academics / Career
- THRIVE = Physical / Mental Health
- MATTER = Purpose / Community / Social
Because the portal is so personalized, it adapts to your experience as your stressors, lifestyle, and needs change throughout college. Moreover, YOU does not have the time and physical restrictions of many other outlets. When the gym closes before your de-stress session, or your best friend isn’t answering their phone, or you can’t make an appointment at the Curry Health Center. YOU is still online and available.
Even before you get to campus, log onto YOU to create a profile to learn about intramural sports, volunteer opportunities, transition resources and more. Add YOU to your list of reliable places to turn when you need to reach out, reflect, or refresh.
LOG IN AND STUDENT ANONYMITY
Students log in through their myUM account or directly at: https://you.umt.edu/ and use their NetID and password to create an account.
When students opt-in to use YOU@UM, the platform collects basic user information (name, email address, etc.). This information is collected to allow the platform to enable secure access and personalized resources for individual users. In addition, YOU@UM collects product usage data (clicks, time spent on the site, search terms, etc.) each time a student uses the platform.
However, YOU@UM’s comprehensive privacy defenses protect this information from risk. For example:
- Data like names and email addresses are always encrypted to protect the student’s identity.
- We restrict our team’s access to student data, limiting access of confidential information to only key development staff.
- YOU@UM analytics use aggregate data and prevents displaying small results sizes.
- Finally, no YOU@UM information is ever sold to any outside third party.
Why have we brought YOU to our campus?
- YOU puts self-care in the hands of students, empowering them to take charge of all pieces of their college experience with the right tools to do so.
- YOU increases the visibility of campus resources and services and also personalizes those resources to students based on their individual needs.
- YOU is available 24/7, anytime, anywhere. When offices on campus close, students can still seek out helpful information on their own terms and schedule. Plus, it’s confidential, making it easy to explore any topic comfortably.
