Overview

The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) will soon be transitioning to the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). The NCATE/CAEP accreditation system is a peer review process based on research-based national standards for programs that prepare teachers and other professional school personnel.

As defined by NCATE/CAEP, the Phyllis J. Washington College of Education serves as the head of the Professional Education Unit (PEU) responsible for coordinating all programs offered for the initial and advanced preparation of teachers and other school professionals, regardless of where these programs are administratively housed. At UM, the PEU includes programs in the College of Education (e.g., Elementary Education, Counselor Education, and Educational Leadership) as well as majors for secondary teacher licensure and other programs offered in the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business Administration Education, and the College of Visual and Performing Arts. Faculty and staff are considered members of the Professional Education Unit (PEU) when they:

  1. chair a program that prepares education professionals;
  2. teach required courses for the preparation of education professionals, and/or advise students enrolled in programs that prepare teachers or education professionals.
