Referring Students to Tutoring

Importance of the Referral

Students report learning about Study Jam tutoring through two primary venues: 1) instructors and 2) peers. Student email communication campaigns, tabling, flyers, and orientation content also round out how students typically find out about Study Jam.

Advisors also play a critical role in communicating support services to students in response to Starfish flags and voiced performance concerns from the student.

Study Jam supports instructors and advisors in their efforts to encourage students to utilize our services. We do this through the following means and are open to additional ideas and suggestions.

Class Visits

Study Jam tutors are encouraged to visit classes if it works with their personal academic schedules and with permission from the instructors. Tutors are asked to reach out to instructional faculty for consideration of a class visit during the first few weeks of the semester.

If tutors cannot make the visit, the Student Co-Coordinators and the Program Manager may attempt to schedule.

Syllabus and UMOnline Text

Including information about tutoring services in the syllabus can also be a helpful way to inform and remind students of free tutoring. Study Jam makes every effort to have tutors identified prior to the start of the semester and communicate those individuals and schedules to faculty in time to include the information in their syllabus. If this has not been communicated in time, we recommend including the "Condensed" version below.

Option 1

Study Jam Group Tutoring provides free tutoring for this course. For the current schedule, go to umt.edu/study-jam.

Option 2

Students should incorporate Study Jam Group Tutoring into their course routine early in the semester and frequently. Use Study Jam to clarify foundational concepts and practice in order to better understand class material. For the current tutoring schedule, go to umt.edu/study-jam.
