Helping Your Tutor

Access

Providing tutors with class syllabus is one of the most helpful things that instructional faculty can do to support the tutor. It allows them to review content prior to their sessions, prep for busy test days, and to help students view the course holistically.

In addition, it is helpful when tutors also have access to:

  • Textbook
  • UMOnline Moodle shells as a Guest
  • Practice Problems

Feedback is also helpful and can take many shapes ranging from areas the class may struggle with to suggested ways to explain challenging concepts.

Study Jam is always open to scheduled and impromptu visits from advisors, faculty, and departmental representatives. Some faculty make a point to swing by before big tests or to require TAs to join the Study Jam tutors and help with tutoring sessions. If you have questions, please feel free to reach out to the Program Manager at shannon.janssen@mso.umt.edu

Communication

Study Jam Tutors are often eager to partner with faculty and do the best they can to help students succeed at UM. They are asked to reach out to faculty to inform of the semester schedule, to request permission to give short (5-minute) class visits, to update any schedule adjustments or canceled sessions, and to coordinate finals week study sessions.

They look to assist both instructional faculty and students through aligning their tutoring and focus with class learning objectives. Any type of clarification that can be provided is appreciated and helpful.

Tutor Referrals to Instructors

At times, the tutor will encourage students to speak with the instructor or the student's academic advisor.

This usually occurs when students ask if they are/will fail the course; if they are missing a tremendous amount of content or foundational knowledge; or if the tutor is not equipped with the right skills or knowledge to fully support the student on their own. Study Jam strives to do everything possible to support the faculty and the student with understanding that some questions are best addressed by faculty and professionals.
