Approved By: George M. Dennison, President

Emeritus status may be granted to faculty and administrative professional staff upon retirement. The emeritus title is conferred upon the recommendation of the President of The University of Montana. Initial review of a request for emeritus status originates in the appropriate department or office. The department chair/director makes a recommendation to the dean/vice president. The dean in turn makes a recommendation to the Provost, who also makes an independent recommendation to the President. Specific criteria for a positive recommendation for emeritus status will largely be vested in the department, based upon those activities that it values as expressed through the unit standards. However, all candidates for emeritus status must meet at least the following general guidelines:

  1. The individual must have been employed by The University of Montana for a period of no less than ten years.
  2. The individual must have maintained a record of excellence in teaching, research/creativity and service.
  3. Emeritus status is available immediately upon retirement from The University of Montana. Institutional benefits for those holding emeritus status are outlined in MUS Policy 702.7. Other benefits may be provided to emeritus faculty as the resources of the home academic unit permits.
