You are cordially invited to attend a seminar with Robert Bellah. After receiving his Ph.D. at Harvard University in 1957, he taught there for 10 years and then moved on to Berkeley where he became Ford Professor of Sociology. For many years, he served as the Chairman of the Center for Japanese and Korean Studies and later as the Chairman of the Sociology Department. His numerous book publications include Habits of the Heart: Individualism and Commitment in American Life (1985; updated paperback, 1996) and The Good Society (1991), both with Richard Madsen, William M. Sullivan, Ann Swidler, and Steven M. Tipton. Habits of the Heart won a Los Angeles Times Book Prize in 1985. In addition to his prolific output as a researcher, he has been a highly successful teacher. In 1971, he received the Harbison Award for Gifted Teaching. In 2000, President Clinton awarded him the National Humanities Medal.
In addition, that night Professor Bellah will give a lecture entitled “Ethical Politics: Illusion or Reality?” at 8:00 PM in the University Theatre. The lecture is jointly sponsored by the President’s Lecture Series and The Henry Bugbee Annual Lecture in Philosophy.
