Earn Your Master of Athletic Training at the University of Montana

UM's Athletic Training program launched in 1971, making it one of the first in the nation. Today, the legacy of leadership in the Athletic Training field continues.

As a student in this master’s program, you’ll enjoy a low student-to-faculty ratio while learning from a range of health care professionals who will help you develop the critical thinking, decision-making and communication skills necessary for success in this rigorous and unique field.

You’ll gain extensive, hands-on experience at various clinical education sites including hospitals, schools, fitness facilities and professional sport teams. Athletic Trainers (ATs) serve an important role in the prevention and rehabilitation of injury – as an AT student at UM you’ll work hard to ensure others can return to play.

What Salary Do Athletic Trainers Earn?

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for athletic trainers in 2024 was $60,250. Employment of athletic trainers is projected to grow 11 percent through 2034, much faster than the average for all occupations. About 2,400 openings for athletic trainers are projected each year, on average, over the decade.

Students Gain Hands-On Experience

University of Montana student Alicia Camel grew up with a love of basketball but injuries kept her off the court. In high school, she got to know her athletic trainer, who was a UM alum, and became interested in the profession. That led Camel to study Athletic Training within UM's School of Integrative Physiology and Athletic Training.

In the Big Leagues

University of Montana athletic training student Audrey Missildine landed a six-week internship with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills. Missildine applied for the highly competitive internship through the Professional Football Athletic Training Society and was selected by the Bills. 

“The program here set me up for success,” Missildine said. “I knew everything I needed to going into it.”
