How to Apply:

Applicants seeking admission to a Department of Teaching & Learning graduate degree program must complete:

2. Complete the Graduate School online application (with a $70 fee).

3. Submit official transcripts from all institutions attended. Official transcripts can be sent via your prior institution or from a third-party vendor (National Student Clearinghouse, Parchment, or eScript) to:  grad.school@umontana.edu

Mailed transcripts must be sent directly from the degree granting institution via sealed mail to:

4. Complete the Department of Teaching & Learning M.Ed. program application with the following items:

  • Letter of intent
  • Resume
  • Prior degree information (degree type, institution, major areas of study, date earned, GPA)
  • Three letters of recommendation
    • You will provide email addresses for your recommenders who will receive a prompt from Submittable
  • One item  from the list below if your undergraduate GPA meets the minimum 3.0. Two items from the list below if your undergraduate GPA is below 3.0:
    • Official GRE scores. (Revised test: Verbal of 146 or higher, Quantitative of 143 or higher, and Writing of 4.0 or higher)
    • Official MAT score. (383 or higher)
    • Official transcript from an institution awarding an M.A./M.Ed./M.S. with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
    • 500-word essay response to the following prompt: "Select and describe on significant learning experience from your life. Identify what you learned and explain how it will contribute to your work as a teacher." (Note: This essay also fulfills the essay requirement for all licensure applicants described below.)
    • National Board Certification.
5. Background check with fingerprinting acknowledgements:
  • Initial Background Check Screening Form (in Submittable application)
  • Background Check Authorization Form (in Submittable application)
  • Application and Notice NPCA VCA Form. A link to this form will be emailed to your official UM email address (or to the email address provided in your application)

6. A 500-word essay response to the following prompt: "Select and describe one significant learning experience from your life. Identify what you learned and explain how it will contribute to your work as a teacher." (Note: This essay also fulfills the GPA requirements described above.)

7. Written description of experience with children and youth. This is a two-to-three paragraph document, separate from the resume and the essay prompt.

Graduate Program Teaching Assistantships are incredibly competitive, due to the limited positions available at both the Master's and Doctoral level. TA applications are only accepted for the February 15th Fall/Autumn deadline for the following academic year. Please contact the Graduate Program Coordinator for more information.
