Personal Summary

I joined the faculty at the University of Montana in 2016 as the Boone and Crockett Professor of Wildlife Conservation.  Prior to arriving in Montana, I was a Distinguished Professor (1999-2016) and Interim Director of the School of Natural Resources (2015-2016) at the University of Missouri.  I received my Ph.D. at the University of Washington and completed a brief postdoc in the School of Fisheries at the University of Washington.  I also have a M.S. in Wildlife Science from South Dakota State University and a B.S. in Environmental and Forest Biology from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, NY.  My goal for the Boone and Crockett Endowed Program in Wildlife Conservation is to build a robust and high caliber research and teaching program around pressing conservation issues that directly impact wildlife policy and management decisions.  Pursuing research and teaching with these aims helps assure wise stewardship and application of the best available science, while preparing future conservation leaders for challenges they will face in their careers.

Education

Postdoctoral (1999): School of Fisheries, University of Washington, Seattle, WA.

Ph.D. 1999.  Wildlife Science, University of Washington, Seattle, WA.

M.S.  1995.  Wildlife Science, South Dakota State University, Brookings, SD.

B.S.  1991.  Environmental and Forest Biology, State University of New York, Syracuse, NY.

Courses Taught

WILD 480 (undergraduate) – The Upshot – Applied Wildlife Management (Spring)

WILD 595 (graduate) – Harvest Management (as needed)

WILD 595 (graduate) – People, Conservation, and Policy (as needed)

Research Interests

My research has centered on vertebrate population ecology at three levels: physiological processes, individual space use and resource selection, and population dynamics.  I combine field studies with rigorous quantitative methods to address natural resource management issues.  I want my research to advance science and our understanding of natural systems while impacting management and policy.  Much of my current research and interest focuses on harvested wildlife populations of a broad range of taxa with a particular emphasis on large mammals.  However, I routinely work on non-game species and my students have worked on species ranging from bees to hellbenders to elephants.  I am driven by the research questions and relevance of work to policy and management.  Our research is highly collaborative with state and federal agencies, non-governmental organizations, university faculty, and private industry.  We have routinely received funding from a diversity of sources including many state and federal agencies, non-governmental organizations, National Science Foundation, and private industry.
