Nature of the experience
- The resident will rotate in the private practice offices of local pediatricians and will participate in the direct care for children with acute and chronic health issues and for well child care.
- In addition to clinic, residents are expected to attend OB Grand Rounds on the 1st Thursday of the month at 7:30 am and Pediatrics Grand Rounds on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 8:00am as their clinic schedule allows.
- The resident on ambulatory pediatrics is responsible for FCHC eCW bean coverage for any residents on vacation/leave during their rotation
- Residents on this rotation will staff Sports Medicine clinics on Monday afternoons at Flathead/Glacier High schools
Focused goals and objectives
PGY-2: Residents will rotate in private practice offices of local pediatricians and will participate in the direct care for children with acute and chronic health issues and well child care. Residents are expected to also round on newborns on labor and delivery being cared for by the provider they are assigned to work with that day, and help provide hospital newborn care and/or attend deliveries with their attending.
Goals include: Demonstrate the ability to perform an appropriate history and physical exam for well and ill children and children with chronic disease management in the outpatient setting.
- Be proficient in the provision of preventive care for the pediatric patient
- Develop an understanding of pediatric developmental milestones and identifying deviations from a typical developmental course
PGY3: Residents will rotate in the outpatient clinics of local pediatric specialists and will participate in the direct care of patients with acute and chronic health issues as well as didactic experiences as structured by the community faculty. Rotation sites include Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric Gastroenterology, Pediatric Endocrinology and Pediatric Neurology. Residents may be scheduled to attend outreach clinics in Helena or Bozeman with a specialist via helicopter transport.
Goals include: Becoming proficient in the evaluation and management of chronic disease in pediatric patients in the outpatient settings.
- Develop better understanding of primary care’s role in pediatric chronic disease management, referral indications and co-management.
