Nature of the Experience
- The resident will staff labor and delivery, participating in ante, intra and postpartum care for both high and low risk obstetrics patients. Residents will work with local family physicians, obstetricians, perinatologists and midwives.
- The resident is expected to round on all Kalispell OB/GYN Associates patients and Logan Women's Health, other post-partum patients whose deliveries they have participated in until the day of discharge, and antepartum patients whose care they have been involved in and/or at the request of the attending provider.
- Residents are encouraged to round on newborns whose deliveries they have participated in.
- Twice during each 2-week block, L&D volume allowing, residents should spend time at the Perinatal Center either seeing consults with MFM or spending time in the ultrasound suite, L&D floor volume allowing. Contact the perinatal center or the MFM on call to arrange. The resident can participate in other GYN surgeries or OB/GYN clinic depending on the census of the L&D.
- Resident will attend OB Grand Rounds and OB simulations if they occur during their rotation and scheduled OB didactics with community faculty weekly (meet with Dr. Lavin weekly in an informal session).
- Additionally, one to two times a rotation residents will meet with residency faculty on L&D on Tuesday or Thursday to review core OB topics. Please be in contact with your faculty to arrange this based on the L&D schedule for the day.
- Down times on L&D should be used for independent study such as reviewing core topics in the OB education found in Box, an online fetal monitoring course, ABFM Maternity module, procedures consult, online breastfeeding module, reviewing ALSO/NRP, guideline development, and/or case presentations.
Comprehensive third-year OB track residents are expected to
- Present at OB grand rounds once during the year
- Help plan OB sims with Drs. Haragan and Huff
- High volume track residents are also encouraged to seek opportunities to learn surgical delivery skills if desired
- Residents are encouraged to participate in the perinatal safety and quality committee at KRMC
Focused Goals and Objectives
- Understanding of knowledge areas as outlined by the AAFP Curriculum Guidelines on Maternity and Gynecologic Care and your OB Handbook
- Proficiency in the provision of prenatal care, including pre-conception care and counseling.
- Competency in normal vaginal delivery, 1st and 2nd degree laceration repair, postpartum care and other ante and intrapartum labor and delivery skills.
- Identification and management of obstetric complications and emergencies.
- Competency in OB triage evaluation
- Familiarity with surgical obstetrics and operative vaginal delivery
- Comfort with providing mother baby-dyad care including peripartum mood disorder, lactation and routine newborn care
