Proposal Format

Proposals should be submitted in a narrative format, be a maximum of three pages, and address the broader impact that your proposed plans will have on UM and your host institution. The broader impact description should include specific planned activities and expected completion time, and should highlight the relevance to the UM campus and/or community. Formatting requirements for the proposal are single-space, one-inch margins and 12-point font.  

In addition to the proposal, the application should include:

  1. A budget (see Budget Guidelines)
  2. A two-page summarized CV
  3. A written statement from the applicant's department chair
    • The letter is required to specify the proposed arrangements for covering duties associated with the applicant's normal UM coursework and other campus responsibilities during the exchange.
  4. A letter of support from the hosting institution
  5. Optional - an additional letter of support may be submitted as evidence of the impact of the proposal
  6. Names and contact information of three individuals familiar with your proposal that the committee may contact if necessary

Additional instructions:

  • A formal budget and proposed timeframe for travel must accompany each proposal – allowable budget items are listed in the budget guidelines
  • If the requested exchange will be carried out in conjunction with a sabbatical, please indicate this in the opening statement of the proposal
  • Letters of support and the statement from the department chair may be either included with the applicant's proposal or emailed separately to global.engagement@umontana.edu as a PDF (by the author of the letter/statement)

Notes:

  • This award is for international activities ranging between 3-12 months
  • If you have previously received an FLTA, please include the impacts, outcomes, and products of that award with your submission – note that preference will be given to applicants who have not yet received this award
  • Proposals which do not comply with the abovementioned requirements will not be reviewed
