UM Hosts Events to Honor Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

MISSOULA -- The University of Montana invites the public to a series of free events later this month to recognize and celebrate Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.

The events, presented alongside the Montana Disability and Inclusive Health Summit, are organized by the UM School of Public and Community Health Sciences and the Rural Institute for Inclusive Communities.

Three free, public events require no registration and are open to all:

  • Monday, March 23, 2:30-4:30 p.m. at the UC Theater: Screening of “My Native America” with filmmaker and former NFL player Jim Warne, followed by questions from the public. Warne, an Emmy-nominated filmmaker, serves as the summit's keynote speaker.
  • Monday, March 23, 7-9 p.m. at the UC Theater: “Comedians with Disabilities Act. A performance featuring comedians with disabilities, led by Nina G., followed by a discussion of an upcoming documentary exploring the intersection of comedy, advocacy and health. American Sign Language interpretation and CART captioning will be provided.
  • Tuesday, March 24, approximately 5:30 p.m. on the UM Oval: UM Autonomous Aerial Systems Office Drone Lab and Accessible Skies demonstration. This is a  public showcase of drone technology and accessible aviation innovation.

The summit brings together disability advocates, health and emergency preparedness professionals, researchers and policymakers from Tuesday to Wednesday, March 24-25, at the University Center. It will feature keynote presentations and panel discussions on disability policy, rural health access, emergency preparedness and health equity across Montana. Full accessibility supports, including American Sign Language interpretation and CART captioning, are provided for all sessions.
