UM Alerts and Emergency Messaging

UM Alerts are used as the notification system for the university to inform visitors and members of the campus community of immediate threats to their safety and health so they may take efforts to protect themselves.

In any given situation, the University may issue one of three different types of alerts:

  • UM Alert / Emergency Notification:  A UM Emergency Notification is sent via text and e-mail when a  significant emergency or a situation is currently occurring on the UM campus that poses an imminent or immediate danger.  This message will provide a brief description of what is occurring, where it is occurring and any recommended standard response protocol (SRP) to take for your safety. (SRP's are listed below)
  • UM Alert / Timely Warning: A UM Timely Warning is a notification that is sent via UM e-mail in response to Clery crime(s) that have already occurred.  These are crimes which pose a serious or continuing threat to students or employees.  These messages will contain a brief description of the incident and recommended safety tips.
  • UM Alert / Public Safety Notice: A UM Public Safety Notification is sent via e-mail with a option to be sent as a text message depending upon the situation.  These notices are for non-Clery reportable activity occurring on campus or non-campus property.  Notices are sent at the discretion of the university depending upon the need to inform the UM community for safety reasons that do not meet the requirements of an Emergency Notification or Timely Warning.

Anyone can opt in to receive UM Emergency Notifications via text messaging.  The process to opt in and opt out is described below.  Please note this is case-sensitive.
