Today we begin a new tradition at the University of Montana, the Week of Excellence. Designed to weave together numerous annual events recognizing UM students, faculty and staff, the Week of Excellence is both a celebration of the UM family’s collective successes and an opportunity to recognize those being honored.

This year’s Week of Excellence includes virtual, hybrid and in-person celebrations. We look forward to transitioning many, if not all, of this year’s Week of Excellence celebrations back to in-person events in future years, as well as to adding new events.

As a way to thank every UM employee for their exceptional efforts during the past 13 months, we will hold an in-person celebration on the Oval from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, April 23. This event will include special tropical-themed music performances by UM carillonneur Barb Ballas and the UM’s Islanders Steel Band, as well as a dance performance by the Pacific Islanders Club. Grab your mask and plan to join us on the Oval for good music, special drinks and treats, lawn games and, most importantly, the chance to interact with fellow UM colleagues and friends. We ask that you not attend this event if you are feeling unwell, have been diagnosed with COVID-19  or have been identified as a close contact.

In future years, a highlight of the Week of Excellence will continue to be the UM Employee Celebration Breakfast, where the employee awards are presented and new retirees and those reaching significant service milestones are recognized. While this breakfast is not possible this year due to COVID-19, we hope you will register and join us for the virtual award ceremonies April 20-22, as well as for the celebration of UM’s new retirees occurring during the April 22 event.

Best wishes,

Seth
