What is UM’s stance on AI?
UM’s stance is that students should be able to work with and without AI. Because we rely on instructors’ expertise in designing their courses and because we know that it can be difficult to navigate AI’s various and compelling impacts on instruction, we aim to support instructors in a variety of ways.

Canvas Courses
In response to demand, UM's Learning Experience and Design (LEAD) team has collaborated with campus partners to create resources to help faculty, staff, and students navigate this landscape thoughtfully and responsibly. The following resources are optional and offered here for those who are in search of materials to support their conversations about AI in the classroom.
For faculty and staff: Enroll in UM AI Essentials, a self-paced course covering AI capabilities and limitations, institutional policies, and practical strategies for addressing AI in your courses.
For your students: Share AI Essentials for UM Students with your classes. This short course helps students understand what AI can do, how to use it responsibly, and how to access UM-specific tools like ChatMT.ai and Mansfield Library resources.
In your course: Consider importing the "AI Use Expectations" page from Canvas Commons to transparently outline your own AI use and expectations for students.
